Are tufts of burnt hair a good look?

spacedonkey · 05/05/2006 09:50

Last night I set fire to my head!

I went to light the gas oven, and the gas had built up inside (my fault, I switched it on before I opened the door like an idiot, and was chatting at the same time) - I reached in to light it and a ball of flame shot out and set fire to my hair!

I was SO lucky ... managed to put the flames out within seconds, but now I have a tuft of burnt hair right at the front of me head (which looks and feels like a brillo pad), half an eyebrow has gone, my eyelashes are half the length they were, and I've got a slightly burnt lip. I sat shaking on the sofa for about an hour with my face covered in honey and aloe vera :-S

I think I'm going to have to wear headscarves or hairbands to cover up the burnt bit (it's right at the front on my hairline and very noticeable as my hair is quite long and I don't have a fringe). It's that or shave me head, which is only an option if you look like Natalie Portman, which alas I do not.

How long do eyelashes take to grow back?

sob Grin

Can't help with how long eyelashes take to grow back, but can offer some sympathy!!!

Ouch!!!!! Sad

suzywong · 05/05/2006 09:55

OH my word, you poor poor donkey!

Pirate bandana is very flattering for the over 35s I hear

MrsBadger · 05/05/2006 09:55

oh no!

headbands are very now though - this may be a Fashion Opportunity!
and maybe treat yourself to some of that lash-extending mascara...

pucca · 05/05/2006 09:56

OMG! that must have scared the s**t out of you,Shock I hate gas cookers, scare me so much! have just moved into new house and was gas but changed it to electric.

Would think it would take a few weeks to grow back, and not sure what else you could do tbh but just wanted to bump this for you and i hope you are ok?

xx

wilbur · 05/05/2006 09:58

Oh you poor thing, thank god it wasn't worse! Eyelashes don't take v long to come back (i lost mine once when younger and it wasn't too bad) and headscarves can be fabulous - just remember to tie it like Sarah Jessica Parker rather than The Queen.

carlk · 05/05/2006 09:59

Oh my that must ve set your pulse racing!!as for the look, hats lots of hats.
cant help with the eyelashes but do let us know

'tis funny tho

Sorry

snowleopard · 05/05/2006 10:00

How horrible for you SD!

Luckily it's the start of summer and I think a nice sunhat would do for most going-out occasions - combined with scarfs etc if necessary.

I would go to a good hairdresser and explain - they may be able to recommend a shorter cut that would work or a way of arranging your hair...? - eg a low side parting if there is long hair left at the sides?

It will grow back and you will look back and laugh! (take some photos :o)

\link{http://jamie.message.uk.com/images/clockwork.jpg\this would look good donkey}

spacedonkey · 05/05/2006 10:02

Don't worry, I can see the funny side of it now Grin

It could've been really serious, I was SOOOOO lucky.

ok so headscarves (don't know how SJP ties hers though - I don't wanne end up looking like Princess Anne all summer), hats and hairbands. I think a trip to Accessorize might be in order ...

Crocheted cloche? Maybe NQC could knit you a pixie hood? I am glad you can see the funny side of it now donk, that must have been totally terrifying. Thank goodness you are OK :)

snowleopard · 05/05/2006 10:05

This would be a nice way to wear it
\link{http://www.worldofwigs.com/product_info.php/products_id/447\headband}

with long hair, and a headband or scarf that was summery/patterned rather than black.

(Sorry to have directed you to "World of Wigs"! :o)

spacedonkey · 05/05/2006 10:07

lol snowleopard! Nice hairband though. This could be a style opportunity for a whole new me!

I was saying to Lou last night, I rather hoped my "fire facial" would have similar effect to chemical peel and have me waking up this morning with lovely new skin, but alas no

last time I went in the Accesorize headbands were all silk and cost a fortune - Claire's ones are £2.50 so you could get one in every colour.

(SJP ties her scarf \link{http://www.silhouette.com/imperia/md/images/b2c/unternehmen/sarah_jessica_parker_1__print.jpg\thus}

snowleopard · 05/05/2006 10:09

Or sweep hair across brillo bit, and pin with pretty flower \link{http://www.whowearswhat.com/WhoWearsWhat/Sex%20and%20the%20City/Sarah%20Jessica%20Parker,%20Carrie/Flowers/Black%20flower%20in%20hair.jpg\sjp}

Deary me, I'm supposed to be working and have become obsessed with your hair conundrum Spacedonkey - must go!

spacedonkey · 05/05/2006 10:10

I'm liking the SJP scarf look

OP posts:
lou33 · 05/05/2006 10:11

donkey, bandanas are my recommendation

i wear mine all the time in summer

spacedonkey · 05/05/2006 10:11

bandanas tied a la SJP?

OP posts:
Bugsy2 · 05/05/2006 10:13

How scary - & I haven't even seen your hair! Seriously, that must have been such a shock. Glad that nothing more serious happened, although, tbh eyelashes, hair & lip being burnt is bad enough.
Make a feature of the burnt tuft & tell everyone its the new "Brulee" look!

Frenchgirl · 05/05/2006 10:14

lol @ fire facial donkey Grin
glad you're OK though, how scary!
you will become the envy of the other mums at the school gates with your variety of head gear, go shopping!!!

spacedonkey · 05/05/2006 10:16

Brulee! LOL

If you can imagine a mini blonde afro going on at the front of my head, slightly to one side, with the rest of my head having long dark brown hair - that's the look :-S
