Clothes/shoes you've bought but never worn

Just wondered if there are any of you who have lusted after and bought an item and then never worn it?

I bought a gorgeous pair of brown suede Kurt Geiger boots and now they are sitting in my wardrobe as I can't bear to wear in case I ruin them! Is it just me or any other strange women like me out there?

Not just you... I lusted after a pale pink Mulberry scarf, and had it for over a year before selling it on Ebay. Colour didn't suit me but I kept trying as I did love it!

smarmyarmy · 08/03/2013 15:34

Glad I'm not the only one. Some things are best kept in cupboards and brought out on special occasions to 'ooooh' at! Smile

About 75% of what I own Blush

I once bought some beautiful purple suede boots with a heel from Biba. They are really slimming because they are shaped to your legs without the bagginess you can get round the ankle in some boots. Amazing. And sat in my wardrobe for pretty much 7 years before I decided I was going to wear them and just decided every time I bought a new item of clothing, I had to be able to team it up with these boots. Obviously living in the UK and them being suede, I still have to have alternative footwear when it's raining but they are one of my favourite items and I've had them for 16 years now. People have been known to stop me in the street when I wear them because they look so good.

Don't worry too much that you might not wear them at first because if you love them, they'll have their day.

I bought a pair of limited edition Hello Kitty Dr Martens. Wore them once

RooneyMara · 08/03/2013 18:12

Yes, I've had a pair of size 5ish Saks Fifth Avenue glittery high heels I bought in a charity shop for at least 10 years.

I am a size 8. It'll never happen. But they are gorgeous.

Sometimes I like to buy clothes and shoes just to look at, I think...I also seem to buy something posh and skinny and beautiful just before getting pregnant and having to wait literally years to wear it. and I never go out or to posh events anyway.

Hmmm.

Hello Kitty DM's ROFL!
I have a size IT 40 (8) Dolce & Gabanna dress that did actually fit me at the time I bought it as I had been ill. It's very small, even the model on Netaporter was wearing a 42 (10).

MaryMaryOnTheContrary · 08/03/2013 18:27

Planet wool coat. Tweedy thing. Hanging as we speak in the wardrobe, never worn.

OneLittleLady · 08/03/2013 18:31

A turquoisey, short sleeve linen jacket. I tell myself every summer that I'll wear it but I never seem to have anything to go with it

MarshaBrady · 08/03/2013 18:33

Worst offenders:

Ivory Louboutin heels, worn twice. Once for wedding and another time managed to get them in an outfit when out.

Liberty scarf, tried to wear it, irritated me as I walked out the door. Hasn't really been properly worn at all. Still have it.

MrsMaryCooper · 08/03/2013 19:35

I have 2 silk dresses in my wardrobe that have never been on my back.

  1. bought for a christening then I got pregnant and although I wasn't showing much by the time the date came it didn't hang properly.
  1. Bought for a wedding. Then I found out what other people were wearing and realised I had completely misjudged the occassion.

Because I don't have much call for posh frocks they are still in the wardrobe. I should sell them, but I can't be arsed. Didn't lust after either of them to be fair, they were just functional purchases for a particular occassion.

foxysocks · 08/03/2013 19:46

i have a pair of miu miu boots worn a couple of times but the heel is a bit high for me, so despite them being absolutely gorgeous i never wear them

foxysocks · 08/03/2013 19:47

oh and a cobalt silk dress from reiss which is BEAUTIFUL but a size 12. i bought it when i was pg with DD (now 5) and have worn it once. it's massive on me, literally huge, i look like a complete dick in it but love it just needs to be two sized smaller.

SteppingOnLego · 08/03/2013 19:59

Oh yes. A beautiful mustard yellow silk top. Colour and fabric gorgeous but the style did nothing for me, especially the neckline. I would get it out of the wardrobe and try it on with stuff then change my mind and wear something else. In the end I realised it was never going to get worn as it simply didn't suit me.

ladydepp · 08/03/2013 20:40

Gorgeous blue velvet Toast dress size 12. But every time I put it on it makes me feel frumpy and mumsy. Still has the tag attached, I should sell it.

Grey Captain Tortue tunic, has an itchy neckline and makes me feel a bit fat. I feel a bit guilty as it wasn't cheap but I know I'll never wear it....

A pair of Ash boots, slightly too big. I have worn them a few times but not nearly enough to justify cost - argh!

whatagreatname · 08/03/2013 22:53

A lovely pair of rose gold sandals from Duo. Gorgeous subtle colour but completely flat and with an ankle cuff that doesn't fit - never got round to sending them back

PoppyWearer · 08/03/2013 22:58

Oh, all the time! I hunt stuff down on eBay, buy it and then admire it hanging in my wardrobe. Then a couple of years later pluck up the courage to sell it on.

I bought a lovely floaty Hobbs dress in a charity shop a couple of years ago (even from a charity shop, it wasn't cheap!) but haven't had the right occasion to wear it.

I am in desperate need of a wardrobe clearout. Think what I could buy with the cash from all the stuff I sell!

whiteandyellowiris · 08/03/2013 23:14

i never buy things i don't love, yet my mum, had two wardrodes full of clothes shes never worn

i wish someone could explain to me why she does it

RooneyMara · 09/03/2013 06:50

Dissonance. What we are versus what we love.

I think we ought to do a swap thread - I have several nice things I'll never wear and I hate ebay.

Womenandchickensfirst · 09/03/2013 08:01

Mmm, I bought a Mary Portas dress in the January sales, and I wasn't sure about the bright orange colour. Yesterday was The Day for it, but something stopped me, and I thought then 'I will never wear this dress'.

snoworneahva · 09/03/2013 08:58

Have a pair of camper wedge sandals that I can't wear because they blister my feet after 2 mins wear. I really loved them and I was sure as they were Camper they'd soften up but they never did.

chickydoo · 09/03/2013 09:07

Only 2 items never worn with tags on
A Reiss top with sheer sleeves & sparkly bits. Was £100, but I got in sale 5 years ago for £20, & a Boden cardi that was a good idea at the time, should have sent it back.
I have quite a lot of evening dresses & shoes that have only been worn once. Because of my DH job, we used to go to loads of black tie occasions, always with the same crowd of people, so I ended up buying new dresses, shoes, bags etc for each event.
He no longer works for the same company & we no longer go to theses do's
Must have at least 15 evening dresses, what a waste. Might keep them for my daughter. She's 18 & has already worn 2 of them.
I have a few tops that haven't had a lot of wear, but keep thinking I could match them with other things, but of course never do. Usually just put on same old tops & jeans.
Need a clear out really
