TMI alert about festering teeth and my new Waterpix flosser

Inspired by another thread on here, I bought a Waterpix flosser yesterday. I'd never even heard of them previously but I've recently been aware of needing to look after my teeth better. So I've used it for the first time tonight and it takes a bit of getting used to but it's amazing! I shot it up my nose at first, which was interesting but i feel squeaky clean now! Anyway, whenever I've flossed my teeth in the past, the floss has always come away smelling gross (sorry), clearly from the festering food stuck there. After water-cannoning my teeth tonight, I thought I'd floss again, just to see if there was a difference and the floss came away with no smell on it. I call that an immediate result. So S&B has cost me money again but definitely a good purchase this one!

I read somewhere there's no evidence flossing does anything

Sunnywithshowers · 05/03/2013 22:37

I'm off to the dentist tomorrow and I'm expecting to be bollocked for the umpteenth time for not flossing.

AlisonMoyet · 05/03/2013 22:43

Ask them for the evidence

littlepeas · 06/03/2013 10:36

I floss when I can be bothered remember and have never been told off by the dentist, where as dh flosses regionally (gets very twitchy if it runs out) and is always told off! I think it must depend on your teeth, how much you need to do it! Anyway! I bet my dh would LOVE one of those do dads!

littlepeas · 06/03/2013 10:37

Flosses regionally Grin religiously thank you autocorrect!

alison - i've read that about flossing too, BUT, like the op (tmi) when i floss, what comes out does smell, i kind of don't care what the evidence says about the effectiveness, i'd rather still floss and get that gunk out of my mouth than leave it in there.

This suggests that some sort of interdental cleaning in addition to toothbrushes is beneficial, though in many cases people don't floss/ brush properly which doesn't help!

Interestingly it also mentions a study that demonstrated a measurable beneficial effect from home water jet cleaning. My own hygienist recommends brushes not floss, but needs are very individual.

I have been hankering after one of those for ages!
