Soooo, for those who remember me, I did receive this dress that I loved. It is very pretty but I look awful in it. Really bad. It makes my hips look gigantic and my bossom very matronly.

I am 5.7/5.8, size 14, wide shoulders, ok legs/bum, big hips and tummy.
I think I have found the issue: I love dresses that would fit long lean women and don't like the ones that would suit me (hourglass/bodycon style).

I am now thinking of going for a black suit like this with either black trousers or possibly blue/navy.
And I am looking for a pretty top. Needs to be silky, soft, quite open around the neck, with sleeves. I loved this but it's cotton and I am worried it will be too stiff and it's just too expensive!

I am so bored of looking but I need to look half-decent.

Would welcome any thoughts!
Thanks!

If you want to look cool and go for something that suits someone with an hourglass figure, how about a 50s look?

If you also want to be a bit alternative, there's plenty around. Try Tiger Milly .

Thank you 50. My ideal look is more Jane Birkin, which is why I am struggling...

I wore this dress in a different print to a wedding last year. It is an unusual cut and feels great on. I know this is not what you asked for but think it would suit your curves : )

Edma · 03/03/2013 14:32

Thanks Jojo. I actually really like it. And I had thought about Vivienne Westwood as her dresses always flatter curvy ladies.

Another vote for a VW dress, if your budget is up to it.

I think a suit like the one you've linked to would look v worky.

Or perhaps you might go for a floral printed pencil skirt with a plainer top half, to avoid matronly boob issues?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/03/2013 15:06

this sort of thing

There are lots around, at all budgets and in a variety of prints.

Can I recommend www.theprettydresscompany.com/

Gorgeous stuff. I wore one of their dresses to a wedding last year and got loads of compliments.

Edma · 03/03/2013 20:47

Thanks Godot. I really like this.
I have ordered this today with this but it can go back (it's too expensive anyway). I was going to wera it with [http://www.jigsaw-online.com/silk-mini-ruffle-top//jigsaw-clothing/fcp-product/5974 this top]] that I own already and beautiful high heels with a thin ankle strap.

I am in two minds about the suit. I will feel more like me, and with super high heels and nice accessories it should be dressy enough BUT there is something about putting a nice dress on.
Can I wear black as the Maid of Honor?

I'd get this and wear with a fur shrug and veiled hat.

shockers · 03/03/2013 21:27

I've seen that one before Tethers, it had loads of rave reviews about how flattering it was!

Edma · 03/03/2013 21:30

Awwww, that's lovely Tether!

Send the black suit back and get tethers dress! (or the VW one)

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 03/03/2013 22:49

I'll second the Pied à Terre one - have drooled over seen them in HoF lately but have no need of a posh dress at the moment. That shape is super flattering to an hourglass and the draping is camouflage for any wobbly bits.

FashionFail · 04/03/2013 10:48

The Pied a Terre one gets uniformly great reviews. They have some of the colours on sale - keep looking, because they come back into stock every now and again. I have the pink one and a lace print one.

waitingforgodot · 04/03/2013 16:00

love that pied a terre dress! Not sure it would suit me though as I am quite top heavy with wide shoulders.
Edma, I would wear what you feel comfortable in
