Caffiene & alcohol bad for skin?

I'm 32 and caught a glimpse of myself in a shop mirror today which really upset me.

My cheeks looked a bit saggy and I looked pale & tired with bags under my eyes despite wearing make up...

I drink about 4 cups of tea a day and a large glass of wine and no water Blush...

If I drink no caffiene or alcohol & lots of water for a week do you think my skin will improve?!

Your skin will always look better after abstaining from alcohol as booze dehydrates it.

Increase your water intake and cut out the booze and you will see a marked improvement, your eyes will be less puffy and you'll sleep better so you'll look more refreshed anyway.

Do you like tea?

I'm pregnant and have only had the odd glass (at a wedding - my own) and have gone off coffee completely. Have to say that mny skin is looking a lot better - but that might be for other reasons. My theory is that it's what you don't put in your body that often shows - and you need water. Oil is good too, are you eating oily fish/omega 3 supplements? Can stop skin looking dry.
You might be missing some vitamins too, it's that time of year! Try a multi vitamin? But maybe get yourself checked out for iron deficiency.
Saying all this I met a woman at my GP the other week who was 57. Admittedly she'd never had DCs but she looked 40 - and her reasoning was that after a heart scare she had to give up caffeine and alcohol and that was 10 years ago; she did have great skin.... Maybe it couldn't hurt to rest from these for a few days.

Thanks guys, I eat healthy and am slim but pretty anemic which is why I am pale & tired looking. Also have 3 young DC so I guess that doesn't help!

I love tea, I don't drink coffee, in fact am dying for a cup now but am resisting!

Maybe I should try vitamins?

If you don't drink any water perhaps you should try to and see what difference it makes?

polyhymnia · 25/02/2013 12:47

Doubt caffeine in quantity you take it would do any harm.
You could try one or two booze free days rather than giving up altogether.
I do think drinking more water will really be a good thing though.Otherwise easy to get dehydrated.
Fish oil is good - I take it because I don't eat fish.
If you are really significantly anaemic perhaps ask your GP for something for it rather than relying on over the counter vitamin and mineral pills.

I dont think it is the coffee and booze - but the lack of water which is the problem.

I try and drink at least 8 or 9 large glasses during the day - and I can really feel it if I don't now.

I won't say my skin is fantastic, but I certainly look more alive if I keep up the water intake.

NickECave · 25/02/2013 14:12

8 or 9 large glasses of water a day! Shock I would be in the toilet every 5 minutes if I drank that much

QuinnFabray · 25/02/2013 14:27

But seeing as you don't drink any water, probably starting with 3 or 4 glasses a day will make a big difference. I wouldn't cut out the tea, if you go cold turkey you will probably suffer caffeine withdrawal, which is mostly a banging headache for several days. Perhaps cut it down to a couple of cups of tea a day, replace some of the tea with water, and definately try cutting out the alcohol. See if it makes a difference.

You say you have a healthy diet, how much sugar do you eat? Sugar is incredibly ageing, so if you do have sugar ( apart from alcohol which contains lots of sugar ), try cutting down on that too.

AppleStroodles · 25/02/2013 14:52

I've had three pints of water so far today and feel a bit better already Hmm Grin

I don't have much sugar, prob about 1/3 of a bar of green & blacks a day but that's it sugar wise, apart from wine but it's very dry wine....
