hi,
we're invited to a friend's wedding (church/reception at bride's mother's house) and i don't know what to wear.i don't think it's very formal, but only have dark fancy stuff at the moment. also, most of my prebaby things don't fit!! what could i buy that i get plenty of wear out of?
thanks!!

My first thought is a classic dress in a plain colour and style that suits you (but prob not black or white).
Wear for wedding with matching (but possibly contrasting with dress) accessories (shoes, bag, wrap if necessary, possibly hat).
Re-use for future weddings with different colours/style of accessories; dress down with flats and cardi for less formal things or daywear.
Maybe something like \link{http://store.monsoon.co.uk/catalog/Welcome?pid=9981\this} or \link{http://store.monsoon.co.uk/catalog/Welcome?pid=9240\this}, but without knowing your shape/age/colouring I'm bound to be wrong on the specifics.

The other option is separates you could wear again together or, um, separately.
Wide linen or silky trousers and a kaftanny-type top? With jewelled sandals? Good for a more relaxed look and will get lots of wear over the summer. Or a long skirt if you think trousers will be too casual.

good luck!

hi,
thanks very much. the kaftany thing sounds great, as i wanted to get one anyway - any idea where to look for good ones (monsoon?) when would long trousers be considered too casual? this is my first english wedding!

Grown-up DD1 went to a wedding at the weekend - she wore a lovely summery mid-calf skirt in white/beige/aqua, and a beige vest top (both v cheap) - with high goldy-beige wedges and aqua earrings/necklace she looked gorgeous.

But yes, you can wear smart trousers to a wedding here if you'd rather do that than a skirt, mimimimi (great name btw!)

From what you say I don't think long trousers would be too casual so long as the outfit as a whole is smart and/or glamourous - think pedicure, spangly sandals and if not a sequinned/beaded top then definitely some good jewellery.
Try Monsoon (as you say) or \link{http://www.east.co.uk/\East).

Do ask the bride for advice if you're really worried about the dress code, but be prepared for her to say 'Oh, wear anything you like' or something equally unhelpful!
