I'm going to a party tomorrow, just found out that I'm supposed to be dressed as a geek. I have nothing remotely geeky in my regular wardrobe - all of my clothing is either a bit goth, a bit hippy, or just understated/sophisticated. I'm short, very hourglassy, size 10, with long brown hair, in early 20s. Fortunately I do wear glasses - I have one pair of brown metallic ones with thin rims (very conservative), and one pair of small rectangular ones in metallic grey (conservative but modern), and I'm trying to find a much geekier pair of black rectangular ones with pink bits from years ago.

My options are:

  1. Retro black and white dress (very 60s) which could be worn with mulberry pink blazer and brightly coloured tights, with flat or heeled black patent Dr Marten boots and my grey or black glasses. Which boots, which tights, and does it sound remotely geeky?

OR 2) A-line patchwork, very multicoloured, knee-length skirt made from silk saris, plus... well, this is where I'm stuck. I have strappy vest tops and a cropped denim jacket which go with it, but I think that looks more hippie than geek. I have no cardigans, no jumpers etc. That would also have to go with coloured tights and flat or heeled patent Dr Martens, and my brown metallic glasses. Does that sound more or less appropriate than option 1?

OR 3) Black and cream houndstooth miniskirt, with black cap sleeved poloneck top (very fitted), and mulberry pink blazer, plus flat or heeled black patent Dr Martens, and my grey or black glasses. This is actually an outfit I would normally wear, so I'm guessing it's not geeky enough...?

I wouldn't normally worry about this, but it's a 40th birthday party of somebody I don't know (with a band, DJj etc), and I only know 1 other guest (who has an awesome outfit), so I don't want to stand out too much!

Thanks in advance! :)

I'd wear 3 without the blazer with knee high socks and flats.

Knee high socks from supermarket or primary easily under a fiver.

What is your hair like?

ShoutyHead · 15/02/2013 18:47

Oh and "fix" your glasses with a jack duckworth style plaster

ScentedNappyHag · 15/02/2013 18:49

What Shoutyhead said Smile

ElectricMonk · 15/02/2013 18:50

Oooh, good point - thank you! I think the only flats I have are these, do you think they will go okay?

The essence of geek chic is surely not to give a shit about whether your items of clothing 'go' with each other or not Grin

Love the name btw.

Oh, and ShoutyHead - <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.haironthebrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/anne_hathaway_hair_styles_bangs1.jpg&imgrefurl=www.haironthebrain.com/2009/10/hair-inspiration-blunt-bangs-long-hair/&h=400&w=267&sz=12&tbnid=mjjzb20JKLYt6M:&tbnh=97&tbnw=65&zoom=1&usg=__cXgXGgwQCRBCNYi-9n1KhSW-U5k=&docid=YkEUrOC9d1zgDM&sa=X&ei=_oMeUYmDCc6BhQeA-AE&ved=0CDUQ9QEwAQ&dur=217" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this is exactly how my hair looks. Any ideas what I could do with it? I have red or black hair clips, plus elastics...

Good point Gemma, that makes me feel better! Grin

*oops, autocorrect... Apologies, Grimma!

I'd say you either need to go "awkward nerd" (the NHS glasses, shirt buttoned to the top, tank top, flats etc) or you need to go sci-fi/gamer geek (jeans, slogan t-shirt - maybe something from the kids section at the supermarket, angry birds, warcraft, nintendo etc - and trainers or docs)

I would personally go for the second as I already have everything for it. Grin I would also do your hair in bunches, or in two plaits, either left hanging down, or twisted up a la Princess Leia.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 15/02/2013 19:00

Just had to share, I searched for geek hair and got this!

ElectricMonk · 15/02/2013 19:08

MrsMangoBiscuit - I actually laughed out loud when I clicked on your link! Unfortunately I don't think I'll manage to get a t-shirt that fits in time, my boobs make t-shirt shopping very difficult because they distort the pictures so much. I used to have an awesome one with Spongebob's face on it which had enormous holographic eyes, but I have a feeling that DH "intervened" in my little fashion mistake as I haven't seen it for a while... I love the idea of Princess Leia plaits, I will try that this evening!

Thank you for your help :)

You just need to vaguely brush your hair and leave it hanging as much over your face as it will go. Forgetting to wash it might be authentic.
