What's fashionable in specs?

I wear them all the time. Need something that looks professional but fashionable, maybe even a bit edgy without looking bonkers.
I'm mid fifties but told I don't look it, reddish/auburn hair.
Going this week to choose.

First and foremost a style that suits your face shape and bone structure. Far more important than fads.

There seem to be a lot of cats eye glasses coming out ATM.

Wayfarer styles are in fashion at the moment and very flattering on most face shapes

Larger shapes are the way to go if you want to look edgy - The Indie agrees.

I'm fifty-seven and have just bought some Red or Dead (No85) glasses from Specsaver - they look edgy without being too extreme. I said I didn't want a second pair and they gave me 25% off instead, so cost £74.

Thank you all. I think I will give the cat's eye a miss as I think I will look like the women in Gary Larsen cartoons. I quite like the wayfarer style. I have some sunglasses like this, quite retro but flattering. £74?! You're lucky, I'm expecting that with my prescription etc I will be about £400+ worse off!

I just ordered my wayfarer ray ban frames only from eBay for £40 and then getting cilary blue to put prescription clear lenses in.

For a -5.00 prescription the whole thing will cost less than £100 for genuine ray ban glasses

Thanks for the advice. By the time I had paid for frames, thinner lenses (to avoid the milk bottle lenses because of astigmatism), varifocals and anti-glare coating, they were the thick end of £500. They are the first thing I put on in the morning and the last thing I take off at night so probably worth it.

Yes, I paid that (and a bit more) for mine - as you say, its the varifocal and as-thin-as-possible lenses which makes it all mount up. But I agree with you they are totally worth it - like hair style and colour and underwear they're with you all the time.

Having worn lenses most of my life I've recently gone back to glasses for the majority of days - still wear dailies for parties etc. It's only because modern frame styles are so good and lenses can be made not to look like bottle tops that I haven't found this traumatic at all. In fact, some friends and family think I look better in glasses.

Why, thank you. I've never tried lenses and it's too late now. I originally enquired about having them about 25 years ago and was told that with my astigmatism, I couldn't have them, but I think things have come along since then. Thanks again poly

Funnily enough, my optician has just given me some daily lenses specially designed for astigmatism to try out - so I guess they're a pretty new thing - but I'm so happy with my glasses I haven't got round to it yet!

What style did you get OP.
I have astigmatism too. It's worst in my left eye but I wear disposable lenses.
I did try the Toric lens that's for the condition but they were awful. I just use daily disposable for the odd day I want to be glasses free (usually in the rain)

I want new frames too.

I wear glasses and lenses. Have a strong prescription for short sight plus an astimagtism so lenses are possible. Am sure my mum has lenses that are varifocal too but has a lesser prescription than me. My glasses are quite square and bold as I'm very pale with very dark hair and a longish face.

I love my Tom Ford's a bit geeky looking wayfarer- ish but in a fab tortoiseshell. His range is well worth a look

tigger OP here. I am collecting them one day in the week I hope. I will try to put a photo of them up. They're not as big as I might have wanted because I am deficient in the bridge of nose department (ie a very small nose) and usually have specs with the adjustable nose rest things. Glasses with the integral nose bit generally end up with the frames resting on my cheeks. So I have gone for some brushed steel looking jobs.
I have some old Vuarnet sunglasses which are a sort of Wayfarer shape but a brown frame and I am reviving them for casual summer wear and I have some wrap around Oakleys for skiing/walking. The latter are great as they sort of clamp on to the side of your bonce and don't move.

I am large of nose fluffi I have no problems holding them up!
I am narrow of face tho so a lot of the even ordinary frames make me look like I'm trying to be geek chic when I'm not.

New glasses are great though, I hope they are lovely when you get them.

I think I need a speccy shopping day!
