Anyone else only wear junk jewellery, nothing valuable?

flobbleflobble · 26/04/2006 18:33

I normally wear a watch - approx £25
And often a necklace too - costing between £2 and £16

but nothing expensive!

The expensive stuff seems a bit gypsy to me - anyone else never wear expensive jewellery?

I am not married so there's no wedding/engagment/eternity ring stuff luckily because I hate them!

I am happy to spend a fortune on clothes though Grin

I hardly ever wear any jewellery, my wedding and engagement ring now longer fit either since having dts.

Blandmum · 26/04/2006 18:57

ff, I am the opposite ti you, my clothes are dirt cheap, but the jewels are real Smile. My outfit cost me less than £15, but the sparkly stuff is real

Confused as to why expensive stuff would be a bit gypsy... do you mean when folk wear a lot of gold??

I tend to wear the same stuff every day out of habit.

Tutter · 26/04/2006 19:24

same as mb - cheapo clothes and lovely gems. often wonder if people look at me and wonder if stones were from a cracker...

blueteddy · 26/04/2006 19:26

Some of my jewellery is expensive & some of it is junk jewellery. I wouldn't consider my more expensive jewellery gypsy like though.

gegs73 · 26/04/2006 19:49

I get what you mean about the gypsy - I think it looks tacky when people have got loads of gold on but not a few nice pieces. I'm just jealous as dh wont buy me an eternity ring. Apart from wedding and engagement ring all my jewellery is costume stuff so I'm with you.

JonesTheSteam · 26/04/2006 19:54

I do have the odd expensive piece of jewellery aside from wedding ring etc., but it tends to be gold, and I have a thing about gold not suiting me, so it's very rare that I wear a gold necklace or bracelet etc.

I think too much gold can look a bit tacky (well it does on me anyway Blush), so I tend to wear a lot more silver stuff anyway, and that's normally a lot cheaper.

blueteddy · 26/04/2006 19:59

None of my expensive jewellery is gold.

The only things I wear are wedding & engagement ring.

If I'm going out I wear stuff from e.g. Accessorize.

I don;t like jewellery much, hate wearing rings (take mine off as soon as I cna each night).

I think it confuses DH a bit, he has tried to buy me stuff in the past but I'm not that bothered (not that I'm ungrateful, iyswim). Would really rather a new pair of boots or coat or something.

redsky · 26/04/2006 20:54

I wear cheap(ish) clothes and cheap watch, and have never worn lots of jewellery. But I now wear a dazzling diamond pendant. My friends and colleagues probably think its fake.

SleepyJess · 26/04/2006 20:58

Of course! Everything I wear is 'junk' from a monetary value point of view! I couldn't afford expensive stuff if I wanted it.. but actually I don't really. Re clothes, call me tacky, but I love New Look.. and Next for a real treat.. and Cherokee and George for the kids.

And even though I know it's the badge of a Real Chav (apparently.. according to Mners!), even my weddings/engagement/eternity rings are from ELizabeth Duke (but I like them).. and I have a lovely new chunky watch... from Avon! Grin

It's just stuff isn't it!

red37 · 26/04/2006 21:07

I love chunky beads, ove my accessories, some of the more expensive ones dh has bought me as gifts.
The jewellery from next is fab!

moondog · 26/04/2006 21:08

I don't,because I would lose it!
Don't even wear wedding/engagement ringsand I am married.

crazydazy · 26/04/2006 21:08

Oh I love cheap jewellery, the only thing I have thats valuable is my engagement ring and my eternity ring my grandma gave me on my 18th birthday.

Mind you saying that £10 for a necklace from Oasis is not exactly cheap....imo

flobbleflobble · 27/04/2006 08:34

Think it's one of the so called status symbols that i am definitely immune to!

I guess its the "carrying your wealth around with you" thing that makes me find it gypsyish to wear high value stuff!

I wear my plain 18ct gold wedding band and solitaire diamond engagement ring all the time. Only time I have not worn them is when pregnant and swollen. I don't take them off at night or to wash or whatever. The only other "expensive" item of jewellry I have is a gold bangle DH bought me for my 30th - cost about £150. Wear it sometimes at weekends or when going out at night. Also have a gold locket DH bought me as a wedding present. Has a very fine chain so wear it quite infrequently.

Other than that I wear loads of cheap stuff from Next/Accessorize/DPs/New Look. And often get bought it for presents by the kids(aka DH/sisters/SIL/Mum etc.

Bozza · 27/04/2006 09:19

Acutally I have inherited one of my grandmother's rings but have to sort it out with my sisters which one and still haven't got round to it. Grandma had no daughters but 3 granddaughters so we are to have one each of her wedding, engagement and eternity rings.

MrsBadger · 27/04/2006 10:09

hmm, interesting.

I'm not a fan of delicate jewelery as am a tall strapping lass, so things have to be quite big to make an impact - fine chains etc disappear and spindly bracelets make my wrists look even bigger.
But big impactful 'real' jewellery tends to be fiendishly expensive, so the vast majority of mine is costume.

Wedding and engagement ring are quite expensive (but very subtle), but apart from the the most expensive thing must be some earrings which were about £30.

Mind you, I don't wear expensive clothes either, so I guess at least there's a 'theme'...
