If you're clothes are a bit big, then do you look bigger?

I have recently lost weight - 2st 8 lbs. I have gone from a 16 to a 12/14 and all my clothes are too big (yey Grin), but I am too broke to buy much new stuff (have a pair of Sainsbury's jeans that fit). My "old" size 16 trousers stay up with a belt and are baggy. I can lie with this, but purely in the name of vanity will wearing big trousers make me look big?

It depends on the item, but could you use Ebay to sell big stuff and/or buy new clothes? Charity shops and Tkmaxx also good for cheap new smaller stuff!

Congrats! I think tops would be ok on the big side but if I were you I'd get a couple of pairs of well fitting trousers. Primark have excellent skinny jeans for £8, and H and M have some fab 7/8 black trousers in at the mo for about £14 which would do for work or casual.

Asda do 5 pound jeans thst fit really nicely. I think too big jeans def add pounds.

How have you only gone down 1.5 dress sizes though having lost 2 and a half stone? Are you sure youre not a 12 or a 10/12?

Over an 18 month period I went from a large size 10 to a size 6-8.
I still have some size 10 tops that I wear and they look slouchy so I think I get away with it.
I also have a couple of pairs of jeans I still wear that now look very baggy and casual!!
I don't think they make me look bigger, if anything I think they highlight how very thin I currently look. My weight loss was due to stress so I am worried about looking too gaunt.
Like you I couldn't replace everything at once. I would start with getting fitted for some decent bras as after losing weight I went from 34C to a 30D.

could you experiment a bit with hotter washes and try to shrink some things (obviously running the risk that they are too small afterwards)

BikeRunSki · 05/02/2013 21:10

Definitely sure i am 12 at tiniest. I have always weighed heavy for my height (I am 5'8" and now 11st 13 down from 14st 7). I am broad too (hips and shouders, big skeleton, huge feet) and a lot of weight makes a little difference on my frame. This cuts both ways!

Yes. I've a friend who wears lots of baggy stuff and it makes her look massive.

Trills · 05/02/2013 21:12

If your clothes are the wrong size (big or small) then you will look worse than if they fit properly.

JemimaMuddledUp · 05/02/2013 21:15

I find that too big clothes make me look really frumpy.

I have recently lost 3.5 stone and gone from a size 20 to a size 12/14. I had to basically get rid of all my clothes and start again. I can't afford lots either, but I took advantage of the sales to buy a very basic wardrobe in my new size, which I accessorize with scarves and jewellery to stop it looking so boring.

BikeRunSki · 05/02/2013 21:56

I'll replace them slowly, but at the moment salary=childcare+commuting! I'd rather save up and get something decent-ish rather than v cheap stuff. I am no stranger to charity shops and eBay either!

Wow Jemima 20 to 12!

I have bought new clothes recently now the baby weight has mostly gone. I have been the same weight since before Christmas but I have been asked 4 times this week if I have lost weight.

Can only assume my old clothes were baggier than I thought.

FWIW I didn't spend much, had some vouchers plus an outlet shop and charity shop.

WillieWaggledagger · 05/02/2013 22:12

yep i would try and get decent-fitting trousers at least if you can, otherwise you risk the unattractive elephant bum effect Wink

otherwise it really depends on the cut and style, i buy tops in all sorts of sizes because the fit that suits me is different to intended
