Anyone interested in a 'what we are buying'wearing' thread for those of us who love clothes but have a New Look/Dorothy Perkins/Primark/HM budget?

I love following some blogs and I liked lurking on the AW threads but I can never afford the clothes, shoes and bags that are talked about. I love looking at different styles and then have the challenge of trying to find a cheaper look on the cheaper end of the high street. I'd love to hear what others are finding to give me some ideas.
One of the blogs I follow is doesmybumlook40.blogspot.co.uk, I love Kat's style and whilst she has the odd bit from Primark or H&M there is a lot of Toast, Massimo Dutti, Jigsaw, Whistles and these are just too expensive for me.
So, does anyone fancy sharing tips on good finds on the budget highstreet?

How depressing - according to that Forever 21 site a size 14 is large!

MimikosPanda · 12/02/2013 22:24

Yes, the sizes in there are pretty harsh, I'm an 8 and I've been know to try on the odd size large. They have a range called Love21 and the sizes in Love21 are much kinder!

What is Peacocks sizing like? I've seen a few nice things online but don't want to waste my time ordering if it's tiny.

Roopoo · 13/02/2013 08:21

I would say Peacocks is pretty generous. If im a 16 then Im a 16 in PeacocksSmile
Today
We are having a duvet day
Flower pj bottoms for lounging - 4pounds Asda sale
Vest - Primark
Cardi - next sale years ago
Slipper socks!!

nilbyname · 13/02/2013 08:35

Hi, I have just found this thread which is great! Can I join in?

I am in PJs, but will be wearing later....

Indigo skinnies-Levi
Orange/Red 3/4 length crochet front top, GAP
Primark vest worn under
Grey tuxedo front/draped cardigan-Warehouse
Hunter Wellies-going out for a bit walk.

There is a Gap outlet near me and I bought 3 3/4 length sleeve layering tops with scoop necks, in various hues/stripes for £12!!

Doshusallie · 13/02/2013 08:38

Wish I was having a duvet day.

In office so,

Black work troos (can't remember where from)
Animal print silk effect top with tie up neckline, tescos (also bought it in cream and black)
Black waistcoat, primark
Black pointed toe very high heeled boots, river island

freddiefrog · 13/02/2013 08:38

I think Peacocks comes up a little bigger than somewhere like H&M. I bought a check shirt in an 8 and it's a little gape-y

Today I'm bumming around at home so I'm just in jeans and a hoodie, couldn't really be fussed this morning

Ashoething · 13/02/2013 09:35

Today I am wearing-

Mint green pearl lowe for peacocks dress
black long sleeve tee-primark
sage green cardigan-primark
black leggings-sainsburys
tan calf boots-yes again!-new look

Taking kids out sledging later so will be wearing my green parka-h&m,cream scarf-zara and cream leather gloves-monsoon.

Roopoo · 13/02/2013 12:25

AShoething do you have a link to the boots? They sound like they go with everything Smile

JeffFaFa · 13/02/2013 12:53

this is so my thread, ive only just started buying new clothes i was stuck in almost 90's timewarp wearing clothes bought from the early 2000's. I tend to shop in supermarkets, dp's, h&m, new look, next, river island and whoever is online as im rural.

Can anyone help me find a pair of FLAT everyday ankle boots to wear with skinnies, pref not in black.

Today wearing
Blue super skinnies - george asda!
black longline vest - river island
blue jumper - dp's
Ugg style boots - river island

Ashoething · 13/02/2013 12:55

I am Blush to say that I can never successfully do links but will have a look and see if they still on their website. roo

Roopoo · 13/02/2013 13:45

Thanks Smile

VivaLeBeaver · 13/02/2013 17:18

Jefffa,

I quite like these

boots

CointreauVersial · 13/02/2013 17:35

Today at work I was wearing:

Cream embroidered-front longsleeved top, ancient Per Una, I think
Cornflower blue fitted cardi with velvet trim, from Laura Ashley
Grey tailored trousers, also Laura Ashley
Black heeled brogues, from Clarks

Laura Ashley do some nice office-y bits; it is generally a bit pricey for me, but they have great reductions in the sales (I like a hefty discount, and get irritated if stuff is a measly10% or 20% off - that's not a sale in my book!Grin )

Now back from work, and back in the yoga trews and hoody....

Ashoething · 13/02/2013 20:05

Sorry roo i couldnt find my boots online.

stefb · 13/02/2013 20:49

This is the first time I have replied or messaged anything on mumsnet so I'm new to this. I am 40+ mum of 2 aged 5 and 13. My trouble is I had spinal surgery last year and haven't been right since. I've lost my confidence I used to be what I'd class as very trendy up with all the latest styles. Now I'm a mess. I haven't got the money for designer, I love primark, DP, H&M and all that but as my daughter is 13 I often look at stuff now and think it would suit her so I shouldn't be wearing it. I think this thread will be an inspiration to me. The mums where I live seem to be stylish, I have some lovely friends at school but they are younger so I wouldn't want to be seen as mutton dressed as lamb. I seem to be a 'difficult age' !! Help!

landofsoapandglory · 13/02/2013 20:56

Stefb I feel the same as you. I have had 2 lots of spinal surgery, and a lot of clothes can be uncomfortable. I, also, have 2 teenaged boys and feel like sometimes I shouldn't be wearing what I wear. It is difficult being 40 something, I am 42 in 2 weeks, I want to wear things then worry if I should, but don't want to look like my mother IYSWIM!

stefb · 13/02/2013 21:02

Thanks landofsoapandglory, I can't wear heels anymore as I end up in agony. Shopping is a nightmare can't walk that far so internet shopping is the only way but I never know about sizing. I know what you mean about looking like your mother lol. I'm a bit stuck really, I spend my time looking at other women to see what they are wearing but my daughter says I should be more daring

MimikosPanda · 13/02/2013 21:46

Not had a chance to catch up and read what I've missed, only just got in and still haven't had my dinner yet.

Nothing interesting on the clothes front today, I've been out and about in the snow all day so dressed for warmth rather than style.

Fleece lined tights - Primark
Leggings - Matalan
Bootcut jeans - Next (old)
Vests
Long sleeve t-shirt - Next SP Outlet
Fine knit jumper - Next SP Outlet
Thin hoodie - Roxy
Thicker hoodie - Republic

Plus coat, hat, gloves and as many socks as I could fit on inside my wellies!
I looked a mess. According to the radio it will be warmer tomorrow so I can try to look half decent Grin

katykoo · 13/02/2013 21:55

land and stefb Too right you should be more daring. It is so easy to get into a style rut.The very fact that you are responding to this thread means that deep down inside there is part of you that really cares about what you wear otherwise you would still be lurking or hanging round in Chat ! I am 43 this year and am slowly but surely beginning to worry less about what other people think. In fact, now I actually get off at being a bit different from other mums at school( Although I have a pair of tweed shorts upstairs that I am still toying with.)
I don't have a huge budget but get inspiration from magazines, S & B ( of course) and Pinterest. I decide on what I like and try to copy them with high street alternatives. I also find I tend to veer towards classic looks rather than 'fast fashion' without even thinking about it. I shop mainly in Primark, New Look, H & M and occasionally Topshop and River Island.

katykoo · 13/02/2013 22:00

By the way, today I am wearing:
Indigo Skinny jeans ( River Island)
H & M Breton jumper
Tan wedge boots ( Matalan)
Black fur jacket ( Tesco)
Tan faux leather shopper bag ( Warehouse but good copy of Zara classic)

Roopoo · 13/02/2013 22:35

Still loving this thread!!!
Tomorrow Im hitting Primark!

stefb · 13/02/2013 22:40

Thanks katykoo, I was getting to the stage that I was more confident in what I wore and didn't really care but then after surgery that went. So next week I'm going to stay with a friend who's going to get me to try things on I wouldn't normally look at...watch this space!

CointreauVersial · 13/02/2013 22:41

I have two hours to kill tomorrow evening in an unfamiliar town, so have identified a big Sainsburys branch nearby to do my weekly shop. And I might just have a quick look at the clothes, just research, of course.Wink

SilverSky · 14/02/2013 00:18

Great thread! Smile

I need to find a new coat. I'm currently sporting Him Indoors' spare jacket. It fit me when I was pregnant. The baby is now 6mo and the jacket has to go. It does nothing for me.

What are you wearing coat wise?
