How to wear a black skater dress

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 20:25

I've bought this one in a size 16

Will black opaques be too much? I am chunky of leg, you see. Was planning to wear coloured dolly heels with it (I've got purple, green, red and bronze ones...). And coloured nails, obviously.

Am going out in town with my friends, who are all in their 20s (I'm 10 years older) and don't want to look like an uncool, fat hanger on Sad

I'm afraid I don't have any advice to give as I only come on here for some much needed inspiration! But I just wanted to say the dress is nice and I'm sure you'll look lovely Smile

LittlePandaBear · 01/02/2013 20:52

I think that some patterened tights would look better with it than plain black. Something like this?

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 21:18

Thank you Biscuits Blush

I'll pick some tights like that up tomorrow, panda, and give them a try at home. I've always steered clear of patterned tights in the past as I've assumed it would make my rather, erm, indelicate legs even more chunky Grin

Definitely patterned tights. And a colourful cardigan, red maybe. Something to brighten it up a bit.

LittlePandaBear · 01/02/2013 21:28

I'm not a fan of all patterend tights but like the ones with a pattern going down the leg to lengthen and slim it!

Have a good night Smile

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 21:31

Ooh, you live and learn! Thanks all - am going to go shopping (it's a terrible shame, I know!) tomorrow Smile

It'd be great with seamed stockings (or tights) and a scarf in a contrasting colour to your shoes worn thus.

notMarlene · 01/02/2013 21:35

Oh and a belt

notMarlene · 01/02/2013 21:37

And red lippyWink

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 21:38

I like her makeup a lot actually! Just my kind of style.

She looks like she's got the starter version of the mumsnet scarf Grin

Belt - maaaaaaybe. I'm always in two minds over belts. On the one hand, I do actually have a waist, on the other, just not sure.

But I have a plethora of looks to try out now! Sort of looking forward to it Smile

id wear it with black tights and a black, red or green cardigan.
id also wear red lipstick and DMs

notMarlene · 01/02/2013 21:43

(FFS Marlene) meant to say black tights is fine absolutely. Fishnets would be grand too.

The thing about vertical lines being slimming/lengthening is a myth. The eye doesn't follow the length of the line but moves from line to line like a barcode scanner. Im on my phone or I'd google and link, is too laborious!

LittlePandaBear · 01/02/2013 21:45

Don't tell me that notMarlene! I need every trick I can to look taller Smile

I still think that if the stripes are narrow and close together it can help. If they were wide and far apart then it wouldn't work.

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 21:46

Haven't had DMs for years. I used to sit in terribly dull lectures colouring all the lines on the soles with a biro.

I love tights, so am glad of the excuse to go and buy a shedload. Might brave red lipstick too...blimey!

A fine Herring bone is very flattering and lengthening

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 21:58

OK - fine herring bone, fishnet, seamed, plain or sort of holey patterned Grin

Dress

Heels, for sure, to lengthen legs etc.

Possible belt. Possible cardy. Possible scarf.

Red lippy (will get help from the orange nice Chanel lady for that one, I think)

Sorted!

Thanks ladies Thanks - I feel a lot less nervous now Smile

And jewellery!

notMarlene · 01/02/2013 22:02

Mac do some great reds. Really pigmented. Dare I mention Mac ruby woo again?

landofsoapandglory · 01/02/2013 22:04

Primark had loads of patterned and coloured tights in yesterday, incase you want to experiment or you are not sure you will wear them again.

I love tights, I have lots of patterned ones!

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 22:05

No MAC in Cheltenham Sad I asked in Space NK and they said the nearest place is Bristol or Brum. Shocking state of affairs really.

I'm not a jewellery person, panda but I am actually considering changing my earrings from studs to danglies for the night. I know - radical!

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 22:06

We have, however, got a Primark, so will definitely stop there...

Is a two hour drive to my nearest Mac CounterConfused

BatmanLovesNoelFielding · 01/02/2013 22:09

I love MAC eyeshadow (never tried lipstick). It lasts forever, and is strongly pigmented. Fabulous.
