Talk to me about permanent hair colour

Having coloured my hair for years now with semi permanent colour, I have noticed that the pesky grey hairs are showing themselves within a couple of weeks of colouring, so I think it's time I bit the bullet and dyed it with a permanent colour.

I'm a mid brown colour and want to stay the same colour. Once I've dyed it and the regrowth starts to appear, what happens next time? Do you dye the whole lot again or just the roots?

I have a fear of a. either getting terrible condition hair, or b. ending up with stripes in my hair from trying to just touch up the roots with colour and failing to get it right.

i do mine roughly every 5 weeks and tend to do the whole lot rather than just the roots, but i guess it depends on the colour you're using and the length of your hair. a strong colour will cause more build up. i am using an ash blonde, and my hair is in a short bob, so any hair that is over coloured is getting trimmed off regularly. must be doing ok with it as my hairdresser hadn't realised my hair was coloured until i told her!

It will be a mid brown colour but my hair is very thick and course, so naturally prone to dryness.

I've just switched as had same problem as you. Used to use semi permanent but it just wasnt lasting so swapped last week to permanent, think i used garnier nutrisse. Looks fine, nice and shiny and it covered all the greys.

I use a permanent and the first time I do it with a new colour I do the whole lot. When I get regrowth I follow the instructions for doing the roots i.e. apply to the roots first and leave it for 25minutes (or whatever the instructions say) and then apply the rest to the lengths of the hair and then leave for another 10 minutes.

i use l'oreal excellence, have tried so many other brands but for my hair, that one works best.
