What to wear for dinner/drinks party?

In about two weeks I'm going for dinner and drinks and even though it's a bit pathetic I really, really want to look nice at this event in particular.

The dress code is 'as posh as you like' but most people won't be going quite black tie level, it'll generally be lounge suits and nice dresses.

I'm early 20s, size 6, long brown hair, about 5 foot 3. I've already got a few possibles in my wardrobe but I'd be happy to buy something new, though I've got a limited budget - around £60 max.

This is what I already have that I'm thinking might work:

Navy

Black Strapless - the dress isn't this exact one, but it's almost identical (if you go through the pictures, the black one appears).

Sequins - I really like this, but think it might a bit too glam. I'm very tempted to buy another in black, which is a bit more understated?

Green H&M - I've had lots of compliments wearing this but I'm not sure it's 'special' enough?

I've been looking at:

Blue strapless and Black Wrap but they both seem rather boring.

This is also very nice but the price makes me think it might be very poor quality. Then again, for one night, it wouldn't matter terribly and at that price if I couldn't wear it again it wouldn't be a disaster. Is it nicer than the same style would be in sequins though?

Any suggestions or tips would be great, and sorry for the mammoth post!

I think the sequin one looks nice, with your size and height you will look good in anything

Thank you izzy, that's a really kind thing to say! The gold sequin one you mean? I do like it a lot and as I already have it I wouldn't have to spend any money but it might be just a teensy bit fancy. I don't want to be overdressed and look a prat, hence thinking of it in black too.

At your age I was your size, and would have gone for either the black strapless you have or the blue strapless on Asos. I still have a similar LBD (straighter cut skirt) from back then. Fairly classic style, may be some shiny new shoes etc if you fancy a change.

The sequined one in black sounds nice too.

Hmm, I could have a look for some shoes but I find it really hard to find ones that fit, I'm too big for a 4 and too small for a 5. Might have to stick with my trusty black ones!

What would you do in terms of accessories for strapless? Ahhh so many choices - I can usually dress myself perfectly well, I don't know why I'm stressing out about this so much.

(By the way the sequin black one is like this. I will probably buy one regardless, just not sure if I should wear it to this or not.)

It's never pathetic to want to look well at a special event!

Actually, I like your green H&M. It's pretty, and would look more 'evening' style with black accessories. A really sharp black blazer, dark nail polish. that kind of thing.

But yeah, you're young and teeny and probably gorgeous and can wear anything at all :)

Thanks Smile I expect I'll probably go for one I already own then, seeing as they seem more popular than the others!
