I'm an 8 in a shoe and always assumed it's a European size 41 but is a Boden 42 an 8 or a 9 does anybody know??

42 is an 8.

I bought some boots recently (not from Boden) that were labelled as 'size 6 / 40'. In the past I'd always heard that 39=6, and 40=7 etc, but that doesn't seem to be the case now. Confused

AndTwoBits · 27/01/2013 21:59

Thanks MrsRogerSterling. I have been wearing size 41 and size 8 shoes all my adult life so I'm a tad confused but shall order 42 anyway and see how they fit!

Yea13Iggis, I always assumed 41 was 8 therefore 40 =7 also!!

I am also an 8 and have noticed for some years that it varies between shops. Some have an 8 as a 41 and some as a 42. I have always assumed it was to do with European and British sizes not being an exact match - perhaps because one set of measurements is imperial and the other metric or something? I assumed it was a 'round up or round down' thing, but that was pure speculation.

13Iggis · 27/01/2013 22:38

That sounds about right, so maybe 40 is a 6 1/2 for example, but gets 'translated' as a 6 or a 7.

AmandaPayne · 27/01/2013 22:40

Could be, yes. I don't know, it's a guess. But I have noticed it for quite a few years - ever since I became aware of european sizing really.

polyhymnia · 27/01/2013 23:20

Most of my shoes are European sized, and I usually take a 41.

In UK sizes the closest for me is definitely 7 and a 1/2 - though I've also found UK shops give varying interpretations of a Size 41, ranging from 7 to 8.

But in Boden I always 'size up' to 42. So I'd say it's probably an 8, but definitely not a 9 or it would be way too big for me.

Have definitely found UK shops give varying interpretations of a Size 41.

polyhymnia · 27/01/2013 23:21

Sorry for repetition!

mirpuppet · 27/01/2013 23:26

Just to add I believe I am a 41 and recently in Clarks they told me I was a 7 hence why I found all their shoes way too big.

daisydoodoo · 28/01/2013 10:04

42 in boden is an 8. I have size 8 feet and boden shoes tend to come up small so usually need thr 42.

orangepudding · 28/01/2013 10:06

I'm an 8 and have always worn 42 European, size 41 doesn't fit me.

polyhymnia · 28/01/2013 10:25

i had the same experience with Clarks. I told them I was a 41, and said that was a 7 and a 1/2. They insisted I was a 7, and the shoes they produced in that size were too small. When they got out 7 and a 1/2s, they were fine - though, as it happens, I don't really like Clarks anyway.

I wish we could stick with continental sizes everywhere, as I've found 41 pretty much certain to fit me (with the one exception being Boden, where I need 42).

AndTwoBits · 28/01/2013 11:39

Well a pair of size 42 Boden moccasins arrived today, a size too big unfortunately! And I've gone and ordered 2 more pairs of boots/runners from them in a 42. Don't know what to do, they were in the sale and only 42'2 left. Feel a bit deflated now.

I think that European sizes are more consistent than UK ones.

So I wouldn't say "I am a 7" or "I am an 8".

I fit into shoes that are 41s, regardless of whether they are labelled at 7 or 8. 40 is never big enough for me. If a 7 is labelled 40 it is too small. If an 8 is labelled 42 it is too big.

AndTwoBits · 28/01/2013 11:46

I have learned my lesson the hard way. All these returns are going to cost a feckin fortune!!

I'm the same as you trills. A consistent 41 (except in Boden) but find Uk sizes inconsistent.

Have just been looking at a pair of boots on the Russell and Bromley site - they're my favourite - and I see they say a 41 is an 8.
