New coat alterations will cost more than the coat!!

So fed up. I bought a nice warm, rain proof coat with hood in the sale for £40.00. Fits perfect apart from arms are a bit long. Took it to alterations shop today and she said it would cost £40.00 to alter as there is padding in the coat. No way can I afford that, so now stuck with yet another 'not quite right' item of clothing. I seem to have a few of them, I'm so rubbish at clothes buying!
I'll have to wear it anyway as it's the only thing I have warm enough for school run in this weather.
When I will learn to not make expensive clothing mistakes!!

Could you get another quote from somewhere else? A dry cleaners or a seamstress without the over heads of a shop to run might be cheaper and just as good.

In the meantime at least you will have warm hands?!

Can you just tuck up the cuff and hem them yourself? This will only work if there are no fastenings/gathering on the cuffs.

It is annoying when a bargain turns out to be not quite right, sympathies.

It's not that difficult to do it yourself.

You could sew by hand if you don't have a machine.

There's probably something on youtube that would help you.

I'll see if I can get some more quotes I think. I have arthritis and my hands are terrible at the moment due to the cold so I wouldn't be able to do it myself.

Yep shop around. Try asking people as well - i got my boots fixed (zip replaced) for £15 quid last week, everywhere else quoted me £40 odd. The place I went in the end was tiny, down a back alley -I would never had found it normally.
