Best everyday sunscreen for the face?

Having recently found out from you lovely S&B ladies that the one of the best things that you have done for your skin is used sunscreen every day, I need to add it to my beauty regime.

I have had brief flirtations with facial sunscreen products but either found them too chalky (Chanel factor 50) or too oily (Elizabeth Arden).

Please share your favourites

I use Rimmel BB cream SPF 25 or Maybelline BB cream SPF 30, love them both. Another poster said she wore the Maybelline one every day on her face while on a sun holiday and didn't turn even slightly pink!

Also heard great things about the tinted version of La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF50.

Neutrogena SPF 20 is pretty good as is Clinique super defence 25.
Although if I am wearing foundation (which has spf 15) then I don't add extra SPF unless it is really sunny.

I love the kiels factor 50 moisturiser it is fantastic in summer.

People who use a high SPF every day - do you take a Vitamin D supplement? Just curious.... I do, after being given advice about it on here. I asked my GP if it was necessary and he didn't have a scooby doo - he said so long as I was getting about 15 minutes worth of sunlight on my arms every day I should be fine. Yeah, ok that should be easy to do in January in sub zero temperatures

La Roche Posay Anthelios (spray) SPF 45. Completely non-greasy and non-pore clogging. I didn't know there was a tinted version! Brilliant!

Can you spray it over make-up without getting all gunked up? Or do you just apply once a day?

These sunscreens you are all recommending, are they invisible on your face? I tried an Avene SPF 50 one and didn't like the white mask effect.

I'd like to find something that sinks in and is invisible, whilst feeling nice and moisturising, priming my skin and ideally with a bit of fake tan thrown in!! Does such a miracle product exist?

I'm using a Hawaiian tropic SPF 30 one, oil free and for the face. It's UVB rating is good. I'd prefer maximum but it was £9 for 118ml which was a lot cheaper than the Clinique city block I was using before.

It's not chalky on the skin and it makes a reasonable make up base.

In winter, I rely on the SPF in my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.
In summer/on holiday I have always used Ultrasun anti-ageing factor 30, which completely melts into the skin after about 5-10 mins and doesn't leave any whiteness at all www.johnlewis.com/230474802/Product.aspx. However, have just come back from a week in Antigua, where I tried out Sunsense. It has a lovely consistency, like skin cream, and melts into the skin. La Roche Posay here, factor 50. I make the ordinary one into a tinted moisturiser by mixing in a little mineral powder.

Have used Clinique superdefense 25 and 40 for about 20 years.

SPF 40 is sheerer but has more chemicals, spf 25 is more titanium oxide and slightly thicker.

In the winter Alpha H SPF50 and summer Ultrasun face 50. I have oily/combination spot prone skin and neither cause breakouts or leave a white layer.

Heliocare gel spf 50, really sinks in, you can't even tell you have any on.

Lotta In the summer I don't wear sunscreen on my body on a daily basis, though my BB cream has SPF 15. Both my son and myself are very fair and live in the not so sunny climes of Scotland so I do believe that it is very important that we get our daily dose of vit D when it is available.

The estee lauder beauty benefit cream is good and spf 35

Olay SPF 15. They do with and without a touch of colour (they say Sunshine). Don't be fooled by being cheaper, best cream I've ever used.

I use Boots Once for kids, factor 30. It takes about 20 minutes to sink in, though. Even better is Hawaian Tropic oil-free face sunblock, factor 30 - best one I ever found, actually, but Boots only seem to stock that in summer.

SPF 15 is not enough. Dermos say that you need at least 20 even on a dull day. AND the spf is based on using a huge dollop far more than most of us ever would use on our faces.

Add to that the fact that you apply normal sunscreen every 2 hrs (on the beach or in hot sun) a smear of SPF 15 in make up or a moisturiser is going to do not very much over a whole day.

On the Vit D question, yes, it looks like you should take it every day. We don't get enough Vit D. Yes your GP is right, 15 mins a day would do, but that's for high summer, and (don't quote me, I need to check this one) I think 10 or 15 mins of sun that makes you go slightly pink is what's required. And the exposed area for this is hands and face, or hands and arms. What's more, the sunlight we get in winter (i.e. most of the year in these here parts) is of the wrong wavelength to make Vit D. So yes we should take Vit D. That's current advice. 1000 IU per day. Long-winded answer!!

I use La Roche Posay Anthelios 50, the tinted one, when I'm not wearing makeup. It's a bit slippy, but the protection is excellent. Other days, Revision 50.

Is this because of stronger sun nowadays? Less ozone layer?

What used to happen to people who used to work outside?

Re the "dermos say..." comment, is that to prevent melanoma, or to keep us from ageing? And if it's the former, the again, what did people do who used to work outside for a living - farm labourers etc? Die of skin cancer? Or did they generally not get to an age when they would have developed it?

I'm interested in this, not being chippy.

Ariel, I come from a family of NZ farmers. An alarming number of them have had suspect moles cut from their skin and are under close watch by their Drs. My uncle died of skin cancer.

Farmers do tend to wear long sleeves, trousers and hats rather than shorts and vests, so they do get more protection than just sun screen.

Anyone who is on a retin a or glycolic regime MUST protect their skin as it's more delicate and susceptible to damage.

I use Sunsense factor 50 every day and highly recommend it. It is very slightly tinted and disappears without any chalky finish. There is also a Sunsense face anti aging option which I will try next. All available on Amazon.
