Really, really good hair products

My hair is like straw and teenage daughters gets really greasy. Help! There is so much stuff out there. What really would help us.

L'Oreal extraordinary hair oil is great.

if your hair's very dry try silicone free shampoo and conditioners. Silicones are nearly ubiquitous in hair products, but over time they build up and dry the hair out. Silicone free shampoos are mostly available in health food shops or good chemists. I use the Jason range and it's really made a difference, although as I get older i accept some drying is inevitable. Once in a while I do a home made olive oil leave in conditioning, that's also very good.

I use hair products from a range called Naked. They are natural, no silicone or parabens and don't build up in your hair. Best stuff of all the brands I've tried, really reasonably priced and you can order direct from their website.

Another vote for going silicone and sls free here! Just three weeks in and my hair is so much softer, bouncier, shinier and healthier. You'll need a last shampoo with a regular shampoo to strip out the silicones and then go crazy with the Naked range, the Body Shop Rainforest range (the hair butter is fantastic) or Tresemme Naturals. There are other brands and a quick google should help you.

For you, lots of moisture- coconut oil is amazing (use as a hot oil treatment or a tiny amount as a serum) or argan oil (the proper oil, not a silicone laden product). Conditioner washing is working for me too- give your hair and scalp a really good scrub with a lighter (silicone free) conditioner and then something more nourishing after. Then you can use a sls free shampoo every now and then when you feel you need a good clean.

I think going silicone free could benefit your daughter too as they could weigh down her hair and make it seem lank. A gentle shampoo would be best (stripping the oil from her scalp could make it produce more oil, meaning greasier hair), with a light conditioner on the ends only. If she wants to decrease how often she has to wash then some dry shampoo on day 2 could mean she can get away with every other day.

Another vote for silicone free. My hair was like straw. I had been using the Extraordinary oil, but it is full of silicone and just dried it out.
I now use Treseme Naturals shampoo and Fructis Repair (something like that ) conditioner from Poundland. I use coconut oil as a deep conditioner and a tiny bit as a finishing oil. It has completely transformed my hair in just a few weeks.

I use Faith in Nature. They have a good range for different hair types, I have never had a problem getting them, local health food shop stocks them and Oxfam sell their products too.

I never get on with high street brands, Jason products make my hair feel even drier, didn't like the Naked stuff.

Might be worth doing a cider apple vinegar rinse for you and your daughter - you can make it up in a spray or old shampoo bottle, third vinegar to two thirds of water, rinse your hair with it before shampooing, leave it on for 5 mins then shampoo and condition as normal. Leaves my hair glossy, soft and shiny when I do it - once or twice a month. Make sure your daughter only uses a small amount of shampoo (about the size of an old 10 pence), she might be washing her hair too often, and doing a freezing cold rinse at the end of washing will help too, for both of you. Also leave hair until it is almost dry( at least an hour for me) before using hair dryer and dry it completely, I usually use a towel and hairbrush rather than my hands, when drying my hair, to keep it clean and glossy not greasy.

Microfibre hair towel- means you don't have to rub your hair dry, and it makes it shinier too- I leave mine on for anot half an hour while I get dresses, do make up and potter about, then dry my hair after that. I got mine from amazon here but I think others found them in pound stores.

Also, Moroccan hair oil/argan oil. I got this from superdrug, and it does the job well, I haven't tried more expensive oils to compare. My mum also tried it and liked it, and her hair is very dry and coarse. Not sure if it would be suitable for your daughter.

Like Tapsel I can really recommend Faith in Nature shampoos and conditioners. I have just started using the Hemp and Meadowfoam one and it makes my hair feel so much better. All natural and silicone free and smell lovely.

I used a silicone free shampoo, my hair went really dry so I've gone back.

Aveda do lovely shampoos, plus I'm finding Pantene masks to be better than the loreal pro mask I used.

Mine did too fluffy -it took a month to recover from using Naked products

If you're going to use silicone free products you need to get rid of the silicone build up that is already on your hair. So use a clarifying shampoo first and then use all the silicone free products.

If you're going to use an sls free shampoo you need to make sure everything you use on your hair is silicone free. I used a Faith in Nature shampoo once and my hair went really bad but I didn't know about silicones so was still using frizz ease etc.

I'm finding that my hair needs a lot of moisture- with silicones extra moisture just made it lank but now it's soaking it up and my hair feels much better.

Conditioner washing is great too- as long as you give your hair a really good scrub (I use a denman shower brush to work it through and exfoliate my scalp) then your hair will feel nice and clean. Then you can cut shampoo use back to once a week or fortnight, whatever works for you.

Mockingcurl- what are the clarifying shampoos out there- neutrogena used to do one but it seems to have vanished? Do you recommend anything in particular
