ok, I'm an idiot, but what do you wear when you go out for dinner mid week?

disclaimer: I have not been out after 6pm in 15 months (New baby)

I'm going out for dinner with my best friend and a couple of others to a fairly naice and pretty hip restaurant

wtf am I going to wear? all the pre baby stuff fits, I just don't have a clue. . . I spend my days in skinny jeans, a t shirt and a cashmere jumper. putting Lip stick on feels fancy :(

I look at the lovely whistles dresses in my wardrobe and just think I will look like a right idiot if I wear that. . . EVERYTHING looks over dressed, iyswim?

Dresses are fine- with flats though.

Midweek dinner- I'd wear nice jeans, simple top, faux fur coat and boots. Or a skater dress, with flat Chelsea boots and a biker jacket.

If it's in your wardrobe you obviously wore it before child and didn't feel an idiot. Get it on, put the lippy on and enjoy being out!

theidsalright · 14/01/2013 21:16

I can dress up, and I dress down every day, it's the in between bit that is now a mystery to me . . .

I don't have flats that are not canvas (yes I really am 37) or office shoes
I don't have boots
I don't have any money

wah. I am beyond help! I shall resign myself to looking slightly foolish and just knock back the drinks!

Why not go for skinny jeans, heels and a nice top?

LeChatRouge · 14/01/2013 21:29

First, don't feel silly, easy to feel out of the loop when you've been busy for so long....

Ask your best friend what she's wearing. Maybe borrow some shoes from her? You could try heels - got any? - skinny jeans, plain t-shirt, blazer and scarf....got any statement necklaces? Clutch bag would be good.

PlumSykes · 14/01/2013 22:29

You need some ankle boots. Then all your dresses will make more sense for your new life.

polyhymnia · 14/01/2013 22:29

I think skinny jeans dressed up with nice top etc as suggested would be much better than a smart dress - think you'd feel uncomfortably overdressed and try-hard in that, specially if restaurant is trendy.

carmenelectra · 15/01/2013 14:13

What I wear midweek is a dress but not party style, more like tunicy with opaque tights and heels, but mid height not great big 5 inch with platforms.

Or skinny jeans, chiFfony type top with heels. Clutch.

thanks for the inspiration everyone!

I've never been one for wearing jeans out but as I don't have ankle boots (which would be perfect, I agree PLUM), I have found an old fairly pristine skinny pair, which I plan to wear with a silk t shirt and vintage coat, with a statement neck thing I made today. shoes will be problematic because of the bloody snow here but I have a very old pair of pumps that will do if I turn up my jeans! I wish I had a clutch. I'm racking my brains wondering how I can make use of an old bag, or I may hit the vintage store/charities local to me tomorrow if I have time.

I'm more relaxed about it now, temporarily at least!

Despite telling you put your lovely dresses on I'm exactly the same as you at the I between thing. Can do glam, can do every day but what you're planning on wearing sounds fine.
