This one's a bit weird: skinny jeans..

I have this weird problem when it comes to 'seeing' myself wearing skinny jeans (or even slim fit). It's like the front view of me in a full length mirror looks really really different to the back. Now, of course I know that the rear view is gonna be different in general, but my proportions/shape/size look different, and this is what I can't get on board with!

Ok, so in front of mirror from front I look slender, well proportioned and just fine. From this perspective I sometimes think I need to gain a few lbs, which I probably do (stress, etc). But, when I look at the rear view with the assistance of a handmirror I suddenly appear squat, short legged and plump. Now, I know that I am not plump, but this is the damn problem! My arse seems to be in decent shape (no sag, but not round either) but in the mirror, from rear, it looks disproportionately wide! This usually puts me off wearing jeans altogether - not a hang up exactly, but less fuss just to wear skirts unless the jeans are paired with a long jacket or cardi.

For ref. I am 5'4, often wear a 2 inch heel, size 8, small chest, 35" hips.
Has anyone else noticed anything like this at all? I have a fairly ok self esteem so not sure if my perception it out of whack. I never used to worry about it, but then in the old days I tended to wear looser fit denim, so I guess this is new to me.
Please tell me I am not alone in this bizarre situation..

You look great. I would say they were straight legged jeans rather than skinnies though. Skinnies are tighter round the ankle and you could definitely get away with wearing skinnies.

Wish i looked the same from the back as you!

AmberNectarine · 07/01/2013 22:04

Get away with wearing skinnies? You could bloody well rock them!

ToastedTeacakes · 07/01/2013 22:07

If you ain't having me on, I am seriously flattered! I don't think my footwear and turn up choices really help me, either, so I do need to start getting jeans hemmed. True about the straight leg, but I have very thin, shapeless calves in comparison and it's hard to find a good fit in that area unless i wear jeggings or super skinny, which I don't like.

I also wanted to stress that my OP didn't concern 'weight'. Just in case anyone thinks I thought I was too 'big' for the jeans. I am aware of my smallness, but it is only my self perception and proportions that concern me. The back view (in mirror) just shocks me for some reason, and doesn't feel familiar. I wondered if it was normal.

I see plenty much larger (fleshier, plus sized, etc) ladies in skinnies and they look so good, because their proportions just work really well. I've never understood the fashion concept that thin is always better, it's really about your overall look.

I still think i look squat though, which is ... another thing altogether.

Squat?!? I think you look quite long and lean in those pictures!

I think you possibly have a bit of body dysmorphia going on, as you look great!

And yes you'd rock skinnies!

ToastedTeacakes · 07/01/2013 23:56

This is worrying! It doesn't trouble me day to day though, which is a relief. I thought I was ok with my bod, apart from my loathing of shapeless calves and recently acquired panda circles, but maybe I do need to STFU and enjoy what I've got while I've still got it.

Skinnies are a bugger, you have to admit. It is interesting how we all perceive things so differently. We are a lot harder on ourselves I suppose.

You absolutely have no problem and I am genuinely jealous! Your legs look quite long tbh

ToastedTeacakes · 08/01/2013 00:18

You people! I'm going to pour myself a glass of Baileys with ice now and try to forget about my arse! Very surprised by this response so I'd better delete the pics before someone bursts my bubble Shock
Thanks for having a look.

No work tomorrow so shall hopefully get an extra hour in bed and wind up on here all morning.

I think you look great too.

I have been obsessed with that blog and have been trying on all my jeans. From what I can see the pockets need to lift the bum so that you can clearly see where the bum ends and legs begin. I have to get rid of my river island jeans as the pockets are too low for me and make my legs much shorter (as a 5footer I need all the help I can get).

Also I have been looking at ladies wearing jeans when out and about and most had jeans that had pockets that were too low rather than too high. So they were the opposite to mum jeans (is there a name for that?).

Drywhiteplease · 08/01/2013 16:04

toasted I'm too late to see your bum ShockGrin but judging by the comments you have proved my theory correct!!!!

ToastedTeacakes · 08/01/2013 18:01

chanie44 I've been wondering about that. Particularly when the pockets are same colour as jeans, so there's no separation. When I wear my primark black skinnies my arse just melts into one amorphous shape and I think this is because there's no pocket definition. I was going to buy some black topshop baxters until I noticed this.

Drywhiteplease It sure cheered me up a bit! I've been doing a bit more googling and apparently it's a thing. There are some weird body hang-ups on the loose out there!
