Prom dresses that aren't big fat gypsy weddingish...

Where to start? DD will be 16, size 8-10 athletic build, brunette. Hates all the bridesmaid-y brightly coloured satin stuff, wants black, maybe midnight blue at a stretch silver and not the usual Lipsy/Topshop/Coast/Monsoon stuff.
Could stretch to £300 or so if it is classic and will be worn again (and have another DD waiting in line!)
Any help from those who've been there, done it and bought a great dress gratefully received!

I know a friend of mine used a shop down in Cornwall that specialise in dresses,

CARGO -- there are hundreds of dresses on there and some really lovely ones.

Thanks for that... Soooo many dresses, surely one will suit?!?!

My dd got hers from Debenhams before Christmas. It is long with straps and has a jewelled band under the bust. The colour really suits her, it is a sort of bottle green. Best bit was when we went to pay for it and it had been reduced to £65 from £130!

Have you looked at Light in the Box? I have never bought from there but there are some lovely dresses. Good proces too. Like this one

HappyNewBleurgh · 03/01/2013 16:48

Gah..!Prices not proces

Soo sweet I'd love something like this for my dd. She wouldn't suit an enormous puffy dress.

I have no idea how to link on my iPad Blush but my dd wore an Ariella dress from House of Fraser ...... Lace v neck full skirt dress. I know I was probably biased but she looked stunning.

TKMaxx.
Dd really was against anything big and flouncy but didn't really want slinky either!
She found a fab dress in TKMaxx, turquoise with giant sequins (sounds hideous!)' knee length, she wore it with some outrageous shoes, also fromTKMaxx. Total cost of outfit, £50.

Parisbanana · 03/01/2013 17:20

Just looked on the TKMaxx website. There are over 400 dresses featured and so much variety. Bet anyone could find something to suit there!

We bought our twins dresses from coast outlet for 50-60 pound, they looked amazing . Yet some of their friends spent hundreds on typical prom dresses and they looked gaudy. You really dont need to spend a fortune and they can look beautiful.......
