shortening a fleece tunic

After good advice on here about what to do with moth-eaten cashmere (I am currently wearing my cowl and wristwarmers!) I have another question: niece who is staying with us was given a very fine fleece tunic but it is much too long for her and she wants to wear it: I think that fleece can be cut without fraying? Would I be able to shorten it just but cutting it or would it need to be hemmed?(I don't have a sewing machine, can do basic hand sewing). If I can get away with just cutting it, what is the best way to make it a very straight line?
