Can anybody (esp shortarses) help me find the right winter coat . . . pretty please!

I've been poring over all the 'warm and waterproof' threads, ordered one coat which wasn't at all right (the merrell aubrey ) so have had to send it back and am really struggling.

I love this Barbour and would probably even cough up for it given that it should last a long time, but it (and all the other barbours I like) are out of stock/discontinued.

I walk/cycle everywhere so need waterproof and warm. I dress very casual (I have a smart black wool coat for dressy occasions), work outdoors a lot of the time, my house and workplace are both generally quite cold so I wear lots of layers, think sweater dresses & the like, hence a very fitted coat won't work (coat I bought was too skinny on the arms, plus had a crap zip). But at the same time, I'd prefer not to look like a shapeless lump!

I'm small/slight build (5' 1" and around 7 stone) so tend unless I'm careful to look as though I've borrowed my mum's coat, which at 43 is not a good look Grin (Oh, and just to help matters I live in w wales so it really has to be mail order - am even considering in desperation a trip to Swansea but not sure how likely I am to find something there.)

Any suggestions very, very welcome . . .

Have you looked at the [whispers] children's version....its in stock in XXL which appears to be for a 15 year old so could fit well. I hope I haven't offended you, I'm a very similar size although maybe a little heavier than you and have recently bought a few coats from Zara kids section.

Barbour Parka

Not offended at all! Fantastic idea - I'm not much taller than most of the 10 y/os round here . . .

Found this at Boden (available in the sale in size 6 in the Olive Green)

Waxed Parka

Also they have the Barbour Storm and Barbour Winter Force available in Size 8 here

Hmm, not sure about the Boden one - also I don't think I'm the same shape as their clothes IYSWIM.

I'll have to have a measure - if the girls ones would fit they are also at least a little cheaper . . . (actually am quite Shock at the thought of spending that much money on a jacket for a growing child Grin - the coat I'm replacing I've had since 1988 and I'm planning on this next one lasting the same way!)

Alternatively wondering about going for a completely different style, maybe something like a traditional pea coat or duffle coat. Can't decide whether duffle coat would be a '1950s bohemian' (good?) or 'paddington bear' (less good) look on me though . . .

Now I'm very taken with this one - duffel but a slimmer fit. The question is, am I completely mad (or just optimistically thinking of what would have looked good when I was 25).

I love that Duffle coat and think they look great on slim figures! Which colour would you get?

Takver · 27/12/2012 20:55

I think the charcoal. I like the idea of the longer length ones too from a practical pov but don't think I could carry it off sadly.
