Advice needed please - is this dress too young for 35 year old?

Hi there, can you stylish people give me some sartorial advice please?

I love this dress, and was thinking of wearing it with a plain black fitted jumper over the top (or similar), navy tights and ankle boots.

I'm worried that I am too old for it as it is pretty and girly, although grey is very sober colour.

I'm 36 and the shape wouldn't suit me but I don't think it looks too young for me.

BunFagFreddie · 21/12/2012 11:34

Thanks Ms Shagmore. I was worried the lace might be too flouncy and make me look a bit muttony. That kind of shape is quite flattering for me. I've broad shoulders, no hips and it would balance me out. The fact that it doesn't have those puffy or accentuated shoulders is also a huge bonus.

Not too young for you but if you are at all norky, a jumper over it is unlikely to work. Why navy tights? What colour and style are the boots?

It's nice but the waistline looks a bit too high for my shape. Is it REALLY 100% cotton? Oasis are usually ployester-ville. It's a good price if it really is cotton.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/12/2012 11:36

polyester

ifancyashandy · 21/12/2012 11:37

Nice dress. But I wouldn't put a jumper over it, you'll kill it.

Missbopeep · 21/12/2012 11:39

I don't see what age has to do with it really. Depends on your figure and face! 35 is young so unless you are looking to wear something a 14 yr old might then what is the issue?

If you are any bigger than a 12 ( or short) then I think it would not suit. I also think that putting a woolly jumper over a delicate lace dress defeats the object and would look plain daft- you'd only see the skirt.

BunFagFreddie · 21/12/2012 11:50

Thanks everyone for your opinions.

I am norky. The jumper might be a bad idea A cardigan would be better, it's too cold for short sleeves.

Remus, the tights would be navy, just because I like the colour. Xmas Blush I've got a very high waist, so I think it would be ok. The ankle boots would either be black or deep reddish brown and heeled.

Missbopeep, I had a very similar shaped dress from Warehouse, it was lovely, but their clothes don't last long. I'm an 8 to 10 and short, but I think the length of the dress would be OK

Not sure about grey dress, black boots, navy tights tbh. But I am a sucker for black opaques generally!

Glittertwins · 21/12/2012 11:57

I'd wear it and I'm a couple of years older than you but without a jumper.

TobyLerone · 21/12/2012 11:59

I'm 35 and I'd wear it. But black opaques, black boots definitely. Not navy tights, black boots.

BunFagFreddie · 21/12/2012 12:03

Thanks for enlightening me and showing me the wrongness of the navy tights, you are both right of course. Xmas Smile Black opaques it is then.

Navy tights can be great but not with a grey dress and black boots. I love navy tights with my tan knee high boots and a denim or cord mini for a much more casual look.

I have something similar (black lace skater sress) which I look super in. I am 40.

There is no such thing as being "too old" for a particular dress.

BunFagFreddie · 21/12/2012 12:09

I'm having an age crisis at the moment and not sure which clothes are muttony and which are frumpsville or too old.

Missbopeep · 21/12/2012 12:12

Xmas Grin age crisis at 35...whatever next.

Dolallytats · 21/12/2012 12:12

I'm 38 and if I wasn't a short and fat round ball, I would wear it!!

TobyLerone · 21/12/2012 12:13

Basically, if you like it, wear it! I'm with Jenai. There's no such thing as 'too old' for something you like to wear and which makes you feel good.

AlienRefucksLooksLikeSnow · 21/12/2012 12:14

I think it's great, but defo no jumper, and black everything else!!

christmaswhine · 21/12/2012 12:19

I'd wear it and I'm older than you

Slightly odd to put a jumper over it though Grin that's a no no

SucksFakeSanta · 21/12/2012 12:20

Lovely dress.

Agree black opaques would look great.

I'd wear it too, I'm 34.

BunFagFreddie · 21/12/2012 12:20

OK, well I'm going to buy it. The dress might be in the sale come Boxing Day, but my size might sell out before I get a chance to look. I've been bitten by that before.

lovely dress. i have a similar dress from oasis although it IS navy! I am 45 and would wear it. Wear if it suits your shape that is my motto. Keep tights and boots black, add a coloured scarf if you need to add a splash of colour. Shoe boots would look good with it also and a little biker jacket?

sieglinde · 21/12/2012 12:21

Yes, I'm with Alien. Forget the jumper. What about either a black leather jacket or coat - leather and lace is always a good look - or a wrap of some kind? Not a shawl, but a nice, flimsy scarf, floaty and trailing?

BunFagFreddie · 21/12/2012 12:24

You can't wear a coat or jacket indoors though. I'd be freezing in short sleeves at this time of year, even inside. Would a cardigan be better than a jumper?
