I had mine a few weeks ago. I wore a long sleeved knee length dress and black tights. Almost everyone else wore short dresses and bare legs, fake tan done of course. They were freezing but looked good...

congratulations Freddie!

oh christ, there'll be no dresses/bare legs combo! although black opaques would look good under the red/purple...

It'll be warm in the hall or wherever the ceremony takes place, because people are always packed in like sardines. But definitely wear tights because there's usually a certain amount of hanging around outside before and afterwards.

I tend to wear a dark coloured dress with opaques for winter graduations (I do them every year - on the academic side!), and comfy shoes with heels you're happy about walking in (if you always wear heels and can walk in them, then fine; but every time I see people tottering up the stairs doing that wobbly Bambi walk, and they just look uncomfortable!). Don't do what they tell you to do and hook your hood round a button on your blouse. It will pull the blouse up unattractively giving you an unfortunate ruched effect down the front. I always take safety pins and pin the underside of the hood to the gown on both sides, which helps the whole kit and caboodle stay in place much better. On occasion I have been known to pin the hood to my bra (on the basis that that is going nowhere!).

Congratulations!

Congrats to you too:) Definitely bring safety pins, as Tuo has reminded me! Opaques do look good under the gown I find, mine was navy blue and it looked fine. You won't see much of your dress under the gown anyway, just a little of the front. A coat would be uncomfortable, and it can get bloody hot during the cermony. I didn't wear heels to this one as I was 9 months pregnant(!) but wore heels to my last one and was a bit wobbly and nervous walking up the steps to recieve my degree. Most people wear heels though.
