Fat Face - why? Such a horrible name.

I refuse to wear any brand of clothing that features the word 'fat'. I can't understand why anyone else would either. It's a horrible name.

Don't like the name much but assumed it was meant to be 'quirky'/ 'wacky' in some way, probably American. Didn't put me off going in once to check it out but seeing the clothes and other stuff certainly put me off going in again!

BikeRunSki · 07/12/2012 10:39

FF do actually dabble in ski wear. They had a separate Technical catalogue a couple of years ago.

LRDtheFeministDude · 07/12/2012 10:43

I had no idea where the name came from - I sort of assumed it was referring to baby's cheeks or something.

I like their clothes and their baby stuff goes down a treat with my SIL, which is probably why I made that link.

germyrabbit · 07/12/2012 10:43

tut at poly ignoring my link

RooneyMara · 07/12/2012 10:45

I can't shop there because it was where ex's new partner bought him clothes from before/ after he left me for her.

That's all. But it is a weird name for a shop.

polyhymnia · 07/12/2012 10:49

Didn't ignore link or all the info on real derivation - was just saying that I used to think it came from something American and vaguely sporting/surf. Now I am better informed!

SunsetMojito · 07/12/2012 10:52

Never really thought about the name. Their clothes keep me away though!
I see Fat face and Sweaty Betty and I'll raise you Hot Milk !

iseetinselandtantrums · 07/12/2012 10:56

Admits she shopped in that very first shop in Val D'Isere probably in early 90's.

FunBagFreddie · 07/12/2012 10:59

Didn't ignore the link either, it was most educational. Smile

Hot Milk! Well that sounds like clothes that would make me feel like a sexy siren. Grin

Most shop/brand names are silly tbh. The whole OP is silly, but that's the way I feel about Fat Face. Plus, they sell - gasp - tunics. Shock tongue firmly in cheek

I must admit when I first saw White Stuff it did make me think of cocaine!

FunBagFreddie · 07/12/2012 11:04

dexter73 Xmas Grin Then you see the clothes!

I imagine the wildest thing a WS customer might try is a pinot grigio!

Chandon · 07/12/2012 11:10

So White Stuff should be renamed: "the Pino Place"

and Fat Face customers don't even know what a fatface is (a big wave), so they should change their name to "Frumpmums Inc."

I secretly call them Shite Stuff and Shat Face, but not in front of my mate who loves the clothes. Xmas Blush

FrancesFarmer · 07/12/2012 11:37

It's all crinkly, smocky stuff, isn't it? I prefer more structured clothes but the name is also off-putting. It reminds me of Fat Frogs - an ice pop they used to sell in Ireland when I was young. Fat Frog later became the name of a ridiculously strong cocktail green drink. So, it's not a name I would associate with chicness.

Themumsnotroastingonanopenfire · 07/12/2012 12:41

I am wearing this fatface dress today and it is lovely so there! (And I only paid £20 for it.)

Scrazy · 07/12/2012 12:54

I got used to saying the name when DD worked there. I also bought stuff from there at the time with discounts and thought it was good quality stuff. It is aimed at 35-40 year old's.

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 07/12/2012 13:07

Aren't funbags breasts?

[irrelevant]

Mrsrobertduvallsaysboo · 07/12/2012 13:53

There used to be a shoe shop for women with size 8-11 feet in South London, called Elephant Feet.
No longer there Grin

GoldenGreen · 07/12/2012 14:00

There used to be a shop in Athens with my name as the main name, and then the tagline translated as "fashion for chubby women". I was delighted by that as a very overweight teenager, I can tell you!

As far as Fat Face goes, I like a lot of the clothes (and am having to be restrained from buying that dress now themumsnotroasting) and always thought the name probably came from a term of endearment or private joke so has never bothered me.

FuriousRox · 07/12/2012 14:08

It's named after le face, a ski run in val d'isere.

The whole ethos of the brand is to target older (30s, 40s) customers who want to look like they have a hip surf/ski lifestyle but who have plenty of cash to spend and who are not/no longer actually surf/ski bums.

As a journalist, I wrote about the company when it was sold a few years ago. It's quite a smart brand idea, IMHO, but doesn't at all make me want to buy their overpriced clothes!

dexter73 · 07/12/2012 14:27

I don't mind some of their clothes - am wearing a pair of their burgundy skinnies at the moment. The thing with Fat Face is to never buy their stuff at full price but to wait for their sales as they have one every couple of months.
