What would you think 'black tie' meant for a 7pm drinks party?

(for the women!) Last minute invitation - only told verbally that it is black tie. Invitation is 'drinks' so I was planning on a skirt and top. But 'black tie' makes me think lbd! BUT I haven't been to anything like this for about eight years so I feel totally out of touch with what it might mean! I do not want to look overdressed!

I'd definitely think cocktail dresses at a minimum.

cathyandclaire · 04/12/2012 12:00

Lbd sounds perfect, I'd have thought.

ladymontdore · 04/12/2012 12:01

With a pretty cardigan or jacket or something? LBD has v thin straps and is from 1998!

LBD and a cardigan sounds fine.
Or pashmina?

seeker · 04/12/2012 12:11

I would think it was a little odd for a drinks party.

But I would go LBD equivalent.

DewDr0p · 04/12/2012 12:16

I'd have thought LBD/cocktail dress.

Where's the party? Seems unusual for it to be black tie just for drinks.

ladymontdore · 04/12/2012 12:33

Thank you - yes I think black tie is odd for drinks, as is the fact that it's going on till late (hope we get some sort of food!), which is why I don't want to be over dressed.
I will try and find some sort of cardigan to dress down the lbd, I think.
Do people still wear 'nude' tights or is that v last century?

I would, but then again I don't wear much black so nude tends to work better with other colours.

DeafLeopard · 04/12/2012 14:40

Black tie does seem unusual for drinks, unless they just want to make it a bit glitzy as it's near Christmas, to avoid everyone turning up in jeans?

LBD and cardi sounds perfect

QueenCadbury · 04/12/2012 16:23

You shouldn't be overdressed in a LBD as the men presumably will be in djs. I should imagine that the women will be in a mixture of stuff from smart dresses to full on ball gowns.

HollaAtMeBaby · 04/12/2012 20:13

Cocktail dress - knee-length or shorter. Definitely not a full on ball gown - these are only appropriate for full on balls!

SilverBaubles33 · 04/12/2012 20:41

LBD with little bright or sparkly cardi and some gorgeous heel. Definitely nude tights! This time of year, you can get away with most things I think. Hope you have a lovely time!
