Is 47 too old for smoky eyes?

Just been to see Skyfall and have been reminded by that brunette dudette how amazing smoky eyes look.

I've never been able to do them but could learn - my question is, is it too late to try it once you have crows feet, bags etc? Will I just look like an old witch?

I!m your age. I used to do a great smoky eye but I wouldn't now. I think I would look like a desperate old bag. Subtle is better IMO.

I have always done smokey eyes and did last night for an office do. After I had done my face last night, for the first time ever I felt like an over made up clown. A bit like a drag queen. Sigh. I am 41 and feel I need to adapt my going out look somewhat

I could try smoky brown/bronze but I think that I should have done it ten years ago and not waited til now!

You could do smoky, but with lighter colours. And blend really well with an eye shadow blending brush.

Which lighter colours would you recommend? I've got brown eyes.

I think you could use any colour that suits you normally, but look at a you tube smoky eyes tutorial for how to apply it in a smoky style. I'm no expert though, I do like smoky eyes but I'm 37. Am a bit dismayed that my smoky eye days might be numbered, so thinking out loud really. The thing with it is to avoid harsh lines by blending really well I think, and maybe avoid eyeliner as it can look harsh, use some of whatever eye shadow you are using applied with a brush along your lash line instead. Or use eyeliner but smudge it well with a brush with some eye shadow on.

Does the Liz Eldridge going out make up tutorial for MN count as smokey eyes? I'm 46 and do my eyes like hers when I go out.

Smoky eyes are not for the 40 somethings. I thought they might be. I am 40 something. Someone at the Clothes Show Live said I could do smokey eyes a few years ago when I was about 41. I let them because they seemed to be experts.

Depends on how your eyes have held up....
I'd go with a light taupe and darken it in crease and over eyeliner just build it up and see what looks good or bad
I think you can always still get away with dramatic eyeliner

I'm 40 and my eyes aren't wrinkled yet but they are changing shape...the crease is now more noticeable/visible close to my nose where it was non existent before..I like it as it gives my eyes more definition so far...
I think muck about with it and decide...sometimes really striking people go their own way..it's up to you

But then I have issues with 'too old' for anything, it's usually a matter of adaption and a more subtle interpretation of a style, otherwise we'll get to 80 and wish we'd realised just how young we were at x age.

I agree. I think we are truly blessed to live in an age where we have so much freedom to wear and do what we like to such an extent. I look at photos of my gran when she was in her 50s and she was already an old woman. Even my mum (now 74), who does care about her appearance, after the age of 40-ish always had short hair, sensible shoes, barely-there make-up and bought all her clothes in M&S. I think it's a wonderful thing that women in their 40s (like me) now still shop in H&M, have long hair, go mad with the eyeliner and wear unsuitable shoes! Really, it's a cause for celebration that there is no need to give up on life after a certain age ...
