Are electric lady shavers any good?

I get the most awful ingrown hairs if I razor shave, wax or epilate, my skin is sensitive to most of the Veet style creams so I was thinking of getting a lady shave.
I was hoping it would cut close to the skin but leave just enough hair that it won't need to break back through the skin again and so avoid the ingrown hair problem. I know this means I would never be smooth and silky but at the moment I am just spotty and scabby because of all the ingrown hairs, really not a great look!
I did try some lotion that was meant to stop the ingrown hairs but it didn't seem to help so I'm hoping that as my last option a lady shaver might work, what do you think?
