I need some help to beat my 20 year addiction to lip balm...

Speedos · 24/11/2012 21:38

Has anyone succesfully weaned themselves from it? Now that winter is here I feel I need to put it on every 10 minutes, it's driving me nuts especially as the one I use is no longer made and I'm having to use others.

How can I stop using it, if I bear the discomfort for long enough will they get better?

Any suggestions welcome!

Oh you poor thing, I had this when I was at school.

Can you try changing to Vaseline and cutting down on how often you use it?

AmberLeaf · 24/11/2012 21:42

Buy a pot of Carmex.

You don;'t need to keep reapplying it and it makes you lips lovely.

Tertius · 24/11/2012 21:50

I remember having this too when I was young. Your lips adjust but it is uncomfortable. Just cut down and ultimately stop! Good luck

Speedos · 24/11/2012 21:53

Thanks everyone, I will try the Carmex though I have a cold so may wait till that goes before cutting down on consumption!

You know you have a problem when your two year old keeps trying to put lip balm on their lips!

I have this too, I can go into meltdown if I leave the house without some, I have them stashed in every bag. I do find though that a decent one means that i don't feel the need to apply to often and use Gayle Hayman Liplift.

here

cerealqueen · 24/11/2012 22:33

Meant to say, a bit pricey but its well worth it and I use a lip brush to reach the bottom of the tube.

MinnieBar · 24/11/2012 22:37

I thought this would be a Shiney thread?!

NewGirlInTown · 24/11/2012 22:39

Keep using lip balm. No lip line wrinkles for you! I have used it for more years than I can remember and it is well worth it

Glossynotflossy · 24/11/2012 23:46

OP switch lipbalms. I have this one and this and have found them both better than other lip balms. I especially like the M and S one as its not fragramced like the first one I linked to.

topsi · 25/11/2012 09:19

I am adicted too. Not as bad when I was younger. I have to put it on last thing at night with my hand cream or I can't sleep.

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 25/11/2012 09:24

I also have no lip wrinkles at 40, I apply every few hours. The key when you're cutting down is to keep well hydrated and drink plenty of liquids.

AntoinetteCosway · 25/11/2012 09:36

Why's it a problem to use lip balm frequently?

ajandjjmum · 25/11/2012 10:02

The Elizabeth Arden moisture lipstick (not sure what it's actually called). Supposed to last for 8 hours, and can buy in colourless form.

It's the best I've ever used.

uberalice · 25/11/2012 10:20

You might just be dehydrated. Do you drink a lot?

mammmamia · 25/11/2012 10:24

Which brand do you currently use OP? I am addicted as well but as long as I apply it once or twice a day I'm fine. I use a Nivea one - it's the one with the green tube but you can't get it everywhere.

HumphreyCobbler · 25/11/2012 10:28

I have no lip wrinkles and I have never used lip balm.

ohfunnyface · 25/11/2012 10:31

I also have an addiction! Lips build up tolerance, I rotate about four/five lip balms sometimes. Have saught advice from all knowing google, and am now trying vitamin e oil instead. Apparently better. We'll see.

justaweeone · 25/11/2012 17:56

So glad it is just not me
I am addicted to Carmex
During the day when out or at work I happily wear lipgloss, but has to be rimmel or a Sally Hanson one that is some sort of lip plump stuff
As soon as I get home have to wipe it off and put on a armed
I apply it constantly ,even will wipe it off and reapply even during the night if I wake up
Have been like this for years, even had my DH take it down to theatre when having an elective Caesaran nine years ago!
Have pots, tubes every wear ,panic if I cannot find it
Sometimes the kids hide it for a laugh!

Speedos · 25/11/2012 20:44

Wow loads of replies and I'm not alone.

I have ordered the M&S one and bought the Carmex today and they already feel better just by using something different.

I don't mind using it every day just not 100 times a day! I was in a 45 minute spinning class the other day and I had to get it out of a tiny pocket in the side of my leggings every 5 minutes, not easy to do when spinning plus I looked like a weirdo.

mammmamia I used to use the Nivea SOS one which they no longer do, well they do a product with the same name but different packaging and ingredients.
justaweeone you sound just like me, always by my bed too.

Thanks everyone!

Is it right that lip balms containing parrafin wax (most of them have this in I think) dry your lips the more you use them?

I do use lip balm - hate that dry lips feeling.

Devora · 25/11/2012 21:09

Carmex is lovely but isn't it supposed to be one of the most addictive?

I find Vaseline and Wilkos own brand the two best for helping dryness without feeling that you must reapply every ten minutes.

I've been a lipbalm addict for 36 years. I have accepted I will be taking it to the grave.

justaweeone · 25/11/2012 21:09

oh no
Forgot that I have out some on during a spinning class as well before I took my hoody off
I really want to stop using it so much as it does take over me life, sounds a bit dramatic!Any ideas gratefully received

SweetieDoesIt · 25/11/2012 21:18

I am so glad am not alone on my lip balm addiction. I also go into mild panic if I do not have one about my person. I have them in Every handbag, coat pocket, my desk drawer at work, next to the bed - you get the picture.

My favourite is Boots own essentials (blue tube) with SPF 15 too, for the bargain price of 99p.

shelldockley · 26/11/2012 14:01

I used to be addicted years ago, when I was a teenager and the Body Shop lipbalms were the thing to use. I agree with Devora that I think Carmex is also addictive, Vasaline is the best. I still have to use it regularly, but probably only a couple of times a day.

The lipstick I'm using at the moment is good too, it's the Maybelline Super Stay 24 hour colour where you put the colour on, and then a balm and it lasts absolutely ages because the balm just sits on top of the colour and feels nice and moisturised without actually getting absorbed.

Devora · 26/11/2012 14:13

No. 7 have just brought out a range of tinted lip balms (in silver lipstick cases) that are very good - I realise I am using way less balm since I started wearing these.
