such as a hat or fascinator Shock the thought of it fills me with horror. Is it okay just to have nothing nowadays?

Not at all.

Most hats are old fashioned and fascinators are the devil's accessory.

A jewelled hair clip or a retro flower are the only things I would consider.

talkingnonsense · 22/11/2012 14:49

Most people don't seem to anymore, but if its a very grand/ old fashioned/ churchy/ lots of older people type wedding, then I would do something, even if only hair up with a fancy clip.

I have never worn a hat or anything. It's perfectly normal not to these days, IME anyway.

scaevola · 22/11/2012 15:07

It's not compulsory, but is the norm.

I'd be wary of clips, as they all too easily look like something random has landed in your hair (as do many fascinators).

I'd just go without, or suggest you steel yourself and at least try on some hats. Or try an over-the-top headband (bit 80s, but might work depending on what you're wearing): try Jonnie Loves Rosie site for inspiration?

Only if it's a posh wedding. I can only think of one wedding I've been to where all the female guests were wearing Things on their heads - the others have ranged from no one at all up to around a 50/50 split.

EuroShagmore · 22/11/2012 15:28

I've never worn one and in my experience the majority of guests don't. The exception would be a society wedding where the men are in morning suits.

thanks for replies so far! looks like I should be able to get away without one then but grateful for any further input and on wedding attire generally as I don't get to many Blush

I have never worn a hat to a wedding and only a handful have worn one at the weddings I have been to. I like Bunny's idea of a jewelled hairclip though.

IceNoSlice · 22/11/2012 17:29

I like hats. I think they look nice (mostly- not princess Beatrice's one though). I think they make your nice outfit look more wedding-ey. But I don't think they're compulsory!
