straight thick hair to curls - how???

MissWooWoo · 16/11/2012 11:56

they always seem to drop out after an hour or so.

this is what I do: use straightners to make curls, pin til cool, set with hairspray.

clearly I need some kind of product other than hairspray but what? I have shoulder length poker straight thickish hair.

help! so bored of it

Setting lotion :) The old fashioned type.

BunnyLeBOOwski · 17/11/2012 11:59

Setting lotion + overnight pin curls. The only way I can get curls to stay in my ridiculously long, thick hair.

Have em in right now!

Jackstini · 17/11/2012 22:59

Sock bun - get an old sock and google the youtube video!

MissWooWoo · 18/11/2012 12:33

setting lotion? so something like this?

surely there must be another way other than overnight? how do hairdressers achieve a curly look on models with dead straight hair I wonder - I can't see them doing it the night before the shoot Confused

Have been lurking to find out the answer to this...any curls I create fall out after about an hour.

So..setting lotion and pin curls..can anyone walk me through this step by step? How do you use setting lotion (thick Blush)

freerangeeggs · 18/11/2012 19:29

I have exactly the same problem BUT... Went to my hairdresser, who curled it with a cloud nine wand and put some Moroccan oil in.

It was amazing! Stayed put for two days, until I was finally forced to wash it.

I have very thick hair but I did get it thinned out prior to the styling, which helped. The hairdresser pinned up top layer of hair, thinned out middle and left bottom layer. It worked a treat and I can now wear my hair like a normal person without fourteen hair bands and three hundred kirby grips.

MissWooWoo · 19/11/2012 09:06

just googled "cloud nine wand" fuck me they're expensive and don't look any different to my hair straightners??

what about using a mousse (I'm so 80s) and then drying my hair and then curling it with the straightners and then hairspray? gel/wax is obviously no good.

Are you actually using a curling wand rather than straighteners?

MissWooWoo · 19/11/2012 09:48

just straightners but they do give a nice "curl" ... it's just they don't stay in. I have used curling 'tongs' (how ancient am I??) before and had the same trouble.

I got one of these to curl dd's hair. They are amazing, definitely longer lasting than ghds imo... she has the baby curler for a ringletty curl for dance shows etc but I've seen the bigger barrels give bouncier curls.

freerangeeggs · 19/11/2012 21:41

Yeah, the cloud nine ones are v. expensive, though about the same as ghds. I could never get the hang of curling my hair with straighteners and it never really stayed put anyway. The cloud nine one was honestly amazing. My hair is like horse hair and I have loads of it, but straight. They did the job, and like I said, stayed in for days.

freerangeeggs · 19/11/2012 21:42

Oh and I did the mousse/dry/curl product thing and came out looking like Shaun the sheep

TheCraicDealer · 19/11/2012 21:51

Yes someone explain setting lotion! Is it a spray? Do you use it on wet hair? Will I look like an extra from Last of The Summer Wine?

These are all genuine concerns.

xmasevebundle · 20/11/2012 01:10

I have thick long hair(middle of my back length)

I do use heated rollers and they do drop after 4-6 hours. I did use stayset from boots its a blue liquid.

But now i use bedhead tigi foxy curls, i spray it in leave my hair to dry naturaly and then curl it with ghds/wand/curlers and the curls stay in for 2 days. I also LOVE the smell of it too Grin

The stayset: apply to towel dried hair using enough lotion to wet the hair well. Style as usual and dry throughly before final brushing and dressing.

MissWooWoo · 20/11/2012 10:19

Ooo am excited about foxy curls - sounds good!

... is it this one xmasevebundle?

Yes Grin it works wonders on my hair and its very thick. It took me a few goes to get the hang of it. It makes my hair smell lovely!

I spray it on wet hair then leave to style then after my curls are done(only a little though)
