Eurgh, DH's Christmas meal.

DH's work organised a Christmas party but said no partners were allowed. This prompted a rebel uprising and now they are organising their own do so partners can attend. This means I can't back out as DH will be 'lonely'
I have an issue with eating in front of people I don't know well and especially struggle at buffets- so obviously this night out is at a Chinese buffet restaurant...

What on earth do I wear? It feels like casual will be too casual, and dressy will be too dressy... I'm rubbish at 'in the middle' dressing, help!
Also, I really want to look nice, as all of the other partner's will be there, and I don't want to be remembered as the ugly, fat one

Help me strike the right balance, please?

wear jeans and a top - no one will see your bottom half and if you feel fat, go on a quick diet?

thats what I do,

scented, if it is a buffet, it is easier to disguise that you are not eating. Have your normal meal at home and then just grab a few things from the buffett, play around with them and leave them in the plate. No-one will notice.

As for clothes, what would you normally wear to go out with your husband to a nice dinner? that's the kind of thing I would wear.

solde My normal dress is a cross between rockabilly and 50s housewife, but don't want to feel overdone if everyone else is in jeans. It's ok with my friends as they know I'm not trying to hard, it's just my clothes

You should definitely wear what you usually wear in that case!

Second vote for wearing your normal clothes - you'll look amazing! They will remember you but for all the right reasons, much cooler than turning up in, say, skinnies, a stripy top and ballet pumps!!

I'm so envious of people who can pull off skinnies, ballet flats and stripy tops though I just look like a beach ball!

I can't eat in front of people either. I find a liberal application of booze helps enormously.
