and are black thick tights acceptable as I am rubbish at getting the correct flesh coloured one -American tan anyone

Black tights are absolutely fine. Trousers fine too.

I'm going to one on NYE and wearing a strapless raspberry coast dress with a black shrug, black opaque tights and pretty shoes.

I am going to one in February and have just bought this and will be wearing with black opaque tights, black patent leather high heels and most probably a red clutch bag
