Wool trousers - Do they have to be dry cleaned?

Had a fab day, while looking for books in a local charity shop I managed to pick up two pairs of black wool trews from Jigsaw and Hobbs for 6 quid each.

So, can I get away with putting them in a handwash cycle or is that why they ended up in the shop?

I have washed a pair of Lk Bennett wool trousers and they were ok.

I'd try hand washing in cold water and then roll in a towel to get the water out and dry as flat as you can. If they survive that, then could risk the wool cycle next time

Meant to say washed in the machine, not hand washed the lk trousers
