Have to go to a posh-ish wedding and thought I could cut a reasonable dash in \link{http://www.marksandspencer.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=2651&Product_Id=1957883\this}
But dh says it's 'a horrid, Abigail's-party, middle-aged dress'
Now, I'm not exactly a fashion queen, so need to ask you all: what do you think of it?

there are lots of posh dresses on the principles website, have a look there

MrsBadger, you are a STAR! thank you - plain, or at least, less frumpy floral, could well be the answer.
Like all your suggestions - especiall the last one with the sleeves (cos I'm too scared to bare my batwings!)
Would \link{http://www.boden.co.uk/col.asp?segname=Women&styid=WH067&segid=6&gpname=Dresses&desname=Chic+Dress&gpid=6&gen=\this} be in the right ball park too?

ah, now, I saw that last Boden one and wasn't convinced by it.

I don't know why exactly - it looks fine on the dummies in Product Colours, but the model doesn't seem to have the norkage to fill it, so it hangs all limp round the chest and upper arm/shoulder.
I suffer from this (not being overly endowed) so I'm hyper-aware of clothes that do it, but if you are confident it will hug you flatteringly it might be worth a try.

To be quite honest I think fitted sleeves are always the way to go - apart from my actual ankles my arms are the thinnest bit of my body, and I always think I'm damned if I'm going to shroud them in swathes of fabric!
