Question to people who dye their own hair

How do you do it????? I mean I do mine all the time but no matter how hard I try, I always get bits of dye on the bathroom tiles. I wear an old bathrobe, when rinsing get in the bath, hunker down in the shower until the water is clear and even shampoo afterwards (which I'm not supposed to do) otherwise the next time my hair is damp I leave brown streaks everywhere

I can't not get dye somewhere neither. I just try to wipe it up quickly before it stains. My shower curtain has brown streaks on it.

i put an old towel on the floor (i have specific 'hair dyeing towels' ;))

anytime i dye my hair, even if i rise and rise and rise; it still fades some the next time it's wet..

ps: pagan, like your name! =D

I dye my hair red and I fully expect my bath and shower curtain to look like the Psycho shower scene when I do it. If you rinse it off straight away it doesn't stain - the only stains I have are on the toilet lid where I didn't realise I'd dripped when putting it on.

I did find it a lot messier though when I did it your way (rinsing over the bath) I find it more controlled if I just have a shower, and rinse it off standing up, and then swoosh the walls and curtain with the shower before I get out.

You're better than me with the bathrobe bit, dkids have sadly got used to me wandering around in bra and trousers when I do mine, and pinching all the babywipes to clean up all the excess dye from brow, ears and shoulders!

I clear the bathroom of all towels, bathmats etc. I wind the shower curtain round the pole and out of the way. I put on old clothes and use a mangy old towel. I have everything to hand, including a pack of wipes and an old damp cloth. Wipe up any spills immediately before they darken - cos you don't see them at first and by the time the dye's 'turned' it's too late. I'm much, much better at it than I used to be - stained the newly painted bath panel once and was not very popular. And some hair-dyes are much drippier than others. I still use an old towel for the first couple of hairwashes and I wrap a towel round my pillow the first night too.

We now have dye stains all over the door. The outside of it, yet. Also the walls. I am so not the sort of person who should post on MN, am I, have the house pride of a gorilla.

lou33 · 30/03/2006 16:27

i lie a towel on the floor and wash it off in the shower

i also wrap a plastic bag round my head while it is cooking

Not a good look then is it this rigmarole we have to go through in the name of beauty Grin

Thing is I really resent getting it done at the hairdresser coz in 6 weeks time it needs redoing and it's expensive and no matter how many times I tell the stylist she still slaps the dye on like she's plastering a wall and I get a half inch thick black line round my skull like some ancient monk!

I'm banned from dying my own hair since we did the bathroom!!! Local tech hair and beauty dept have just opened a place in town so can get it done cheaply now! I had no control over dye it would just get everywhere!!

BettySpaghetti · 30/03/2006 17:31

When you all say that you wash it off in the shower, do you mean actually stand in the shower? Doesn't that mean you end up with streaks of dye on your body? What about the grouting -does that not absorb the dye and stain too?

lou33 · 30/03/2006 17:39

i stand in the shower and let it run off

it has never stained because it doesnt get a chance to stick, and the shower is always fine

spacecadet · 30/03/2006 18:05

i dye my hair regularly, either a dark violet or red and i never get any anywhere, i stand in the shower to rinse it off and rinse the tiles at the same time.

jalopy · 30/03/2006 18:14

Does anyone use the henna powder from the Body shop? What do you think of it?

serenity · 31/03/2006 01:27

When you rinse it off under the shower the dye is too dilute to stain anything, so no I don't end up with streaks on anything (could be a cheap alternative to an all over spray tan otherwise Grin ). We've got white tiles and grout, and it's never stained that either.

I have never tried to dye my own hair ...
