Winter wedding - what to wear?

We're heading to a wedding next month and I have no idea what to wear - I've never been to a winter wedding before. All the dresses that I would usually wear to weddings are rather floaty and summery (and cold!).

I'm quite a casual person dress-wise. I wear smart jeans or denim/cord skirts to work with shoes and boots, so I don't have any suits.

I don't want to look too casual, be too cold, or buy something that I'll never wear again.

Any ideas?

A shift dress in one bold colour that you could wear with a cardigan and coat? You might be able to wear it for work after perhaps?

Thanks Milky. You've just reminded me of a couple of dresses I have stashed away that I bought just before I got pregant last year (and are empire so should still fit ).

Maybe this is my excuse to get a smart new coat.

My day to day style of dressing just seems far too casual for a wedding. Not in the UK and here everything is much less dressy (DNs came to our summer wedding in shorts and illuminous T-shirts!)
