Ring finger accent nail polish. Cool or naff?

I was thinking of doing a deep raspberry shade with a purple crackle effect over the top on the ring finger. But then I noticed today a lot of my 6th from students are doing this sort of thing and wondered if I am too old (28) to pull it off?

Very naff.

Sorry

louloutheshamed · 12/10/2012 19:50

Oh Sad

It was cool. It is now naff. Joan Rivers does it...all the proof you need.

Catsmamma · 12/10/2012 19:55

it's random colours now.

well it is up here, sort of ombré, but mix and match works too.

and I am well old, not Joan Rivers old though.

louloutheshamed · 12/10/2012 20:09

That's unanimous then! Hoe do you do ombré? Blush

Oh, I like it. But I am 36 so well old and unstylish.

Catsmamma · 12/10/2012 20:14

Ombré is two things

either, five different shades of the same colour, light to dark as you please from thumb to pinkie or vice versa .... like this!

OR

a lot of hard work involving two or three coats of different colours on each nail all dibbled and dabbled with makeup sponges. .... like this

ruby22 · 12/10/2012 20:18

so so naff, all of it

IllageVidiot · 12/10/2012 20:20

An easier way to do the 'true' ombre nails is to actually paint the sponge and then apply over whole nail. A quick tidy around the edges and done.

I find it a lot faster and easier to do than faffing with sponging and drying of 3 or four layers of colour. And it looks just as good. Unless you have set aside some time to sit and enjoy doing your nails the long way and relaxing with it in the peace and quiet I would always one step!

IllageVidiot · 12/10/2012 20:26

Oh I forgot - does it matter if it's naff if you like it?

I think a great deal of what's going on in 'Style and Beauty' (mags rather than here btw) generally is shit of the highest order however if you like it, you enjoy looking at it then why not do it? If one is only doing it for other people and their judement then yes crackle, ring finger emphasis, candy stripe and ombre are all ridiculously faddy and even teenagers look stupid. OTOH most stuff will invoke that response in any number of people. So...fuck 'em.

IllageVidiot · 12/10/2012 20:27

*judgement...and all the other mistakes; sigh, I'll be off to the drunk thread!

ceeveebee · 12/10/2012 20:29

Tulisa had this on last weeks X factor so surprised you had to ask tbh...

BeauNeidel · 12/10/2012 22:15

I agree with Illage.

I've just turned 30 (sob) and I love doing my nails. It's the only thing I really get time to do just for me, so I like doing different colours and effects. I think it looks nice. I have bright orange with gold glitter polish today, with a matte topcoat. I think I look ACE! Grin

purplepenguin86 · 13/10/2012 01:05

God, I must be so out of touch - I don't even know about this. So you paint all of your nails the same colour except your ring finger? Why? I don't mind some of the nail varnishes with different effects, but why would you do 1 nail different? I feel so out of touch, and I'm only 26!

UltraBOF · 13/10/2012 01:06

Is the long little fingernail to scoop coke with over now too? Sad

mutny · 13/10/2012 07:37

I think it can look ok. I also think it doesn't really matter what others think.

As to the question of why? Why not?

Caerlaverock · 13/10/2012 07:39

Do your middle finger for emphasis

BlackSwan · 13/10/2012 07:42

One colour, all nails, trimmed. No glitter/cracked effects for any or all nails. No little swarovski crystals or pictures of flowers. No fake nails. Anything else looks overwrought.

nilbyname · 13/10/2012 07:45

I think the multi nail colour, but not the speckled, crackled effect.

I think a true red on short nails never fails to look cool, and failing that a dark grey or deep purple.
