Is home hair dye ok?

I've got to economise. Are there any good highlights/lowlight products out ther e? I know nothing but my roots are weeping....

NO! Learn from my mistakes please! I had a brief fling with some home hair dye recently and it was a disaster. Now I don't give a flying fig about my hair really and it is very forgiving of my continual neglect, I don't brush it for days but show it a brush and it pings back to lovely, thick and bouncy hair all on its own. I do detest grey hair however but home dye's done by me look like home dyes, are not easy or nice and are too matt without any highs and lows.......

I would say that for highlights it's got to be salon all the way but .. find someone local to you who is either out of college and needs the practise, is mobile or works from home - I've used all three of these in the past and they have ALL been half the price of a salon and just as good.

I wouldn't do the training sessions in a hairdressers no matter what the price!

I have just used John Frieda mousse/foam for the second time.
Easy, no drips, I am converted. Lasted just under 6 werks because I am an old gimmer and vvv grey.

I am a hairdresser, and there is no way on earth I would be able to highlight my own hair successfully. But what I can do is tint the roots in between highlight appointments, with the aid of two mirrors, a tint brush and bowl, you have to be reasonably accurate as you don't want to overlap colour on to the highlights. Or get a friend to help.
I think home hair dye products are pretty good these days, and reading the boards lots of people have success. The problems occurs with a) hair dye coming out too dark (always go a shade lighter) and b) hair dye building up when overlapping dye ie not just doing the roots. Then the hair on the ends that is constantly dyed over then becomes very porous and the dye then fades out much quicker, ending up with patchy results.

I'm going to be a wuss and stick w the professionals. We will have to eat gruel. But at least I will look good.
