The Worst perfume ever!

anniewoo · 28/09/2012 19:54

Was in HOF today and as i have no money at the moment to spend (despite their sale) decided to cheer myself up with a spray ( or two) of their posh perfumes. Big Mistake- sprayed Serge lutyens Tuberose Criminale- and it was!!!! Well the smell was criminal- like camphor, moth balls mixed with wintergreen , that awful muscle rub stuff. Jesus wept and it lasts and lasts and lasts. Can't kill it off, despite Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio on my other wrist. You have been warned.....Though i do dare you!!!

DonaAna thank you thank you. I read a really interesting bit of blurb on the Molecule range and have really wanted to smell them ever since. I shall take your advice and try all three - paper first, then skin.

I love finding unusual scents and fragrances. And I now love you a bit as well for being so knowledgable Grin

Perfumes do smell differently on different people though, to a certain extent at least.

No prob Jaded - continue exploring!

Mainstream perfumes are a bit dumbed-down these days, they assume you want to smell of your shampoo or fruit yogurt (=same cheap aroma chemicals are used in all of them). Fully synthetic perfumes can be great (Molecules and Comme des Garcons lines for example), but once you have gotten to know the richness of naturals, there is no going back to Sephora offerings.

Iirc there is a recent lighter form of Angel (edt?) that is quite wearable. Am not an expert though.

The Rose D'Angel is well-reviewed- that's one I really like.

They must hate me at work then as I alternate between Angel and Opium. Not quite on a daily basis but probably weekly or monthly. Have had good comments on both and not a headache in sight!!

I was given a bottle of Chloe Neroli and it smells like Mr Sheen. Full bottle still sitting on my dresser.

Oh oh oh!
Dh has just rang and asked me what perfume I want when he gets back from his work trip....
What shall I tell him?

Oh god I loathe angel.

I remember years ago before it was available in the UK, every single model/glamorous actress declare in interviews that it was their favorite scent. In my youthful naivety I was convinced that this perfume would change my life.

A friend brought me, at great expense, a bottle back from the states and I have never smelt anything so hideous. Or been so disappointed.

Oh DonaAna, I've just had to order Molecule 01 because of you - you are a bad, bad woman.....

And my vote for worst perfume ever is Loulou or Tresor, hideous, sinus-raping monstrosities.

Report
simplesusan · 29/09/2012 15:50

Loulou is awful.
I dislike all Dior perfumes too.

Knowing by Este Lauder. Foul. My boss wore it when I was pg with DS and I used to want to throw up every time she came near.

O de Lancôme smells/smelt (I don't know if they still do it) like fly spray, and Clarins Eau Dynamisante smells like stale sweat.

I wish they still made Havoc, by Mary Quant, I loved that as a teenager.

Frederic Malle does some of the best perfumes around.

Some of Dior boutique perfumes are really good (I own several) - their department store Eau Sauvage is still great (although older versions were better). Unfortunately they have messed with most of their great classics.

If you would like to start usung better perfumes but don't know where to start, I recommend L'Artisan Parfumeur and Diptyque. Great, easy-to-like perfumes that are not worn by everyone else.

And smell them yourself, first on strip, then on skin. I got into perfume after really dissappointing blind buys / impulse purchases at duty frees. There are great perfumes out there, but knowing a little bit about what is good and what you like/dislike helps a lot. A great way of getting to know perfumes is ordering small sample sizes - for the price of an average duty free bottle you can sample ten or twenty quality perfumes at your own leisure. Via Les Senteurs, First in Fragrance, Luckyscent, Surrender to Chance, Parfumeria Neroli - or directly from perfume houses.

HA HA I love loads of the stinkers mentioned on here-

Knowing is gorgeous and I always buy the gift set for myself at xmas
Mil buys me the Beautiful by estee lauder set
Also used to love Opium but not since its been reformulated
Love Shalimar,Samsara and Mitsouko
Love Poison but agree it smells a bit old fashioned so I wear Hypnotic poison.
Boudoir-this is definately a love it or hate it perfume. Ditto with Let it Rock.

I cant wear chloe narcisee or loulou as give me migraines but I dont dislike them.

I am meh about Kenzo flower and dont get its popularity. Love Kenzo Amour although its sillage is crap.

Yes, go to Les Senteurs, tell them what you like and they will come out with some "better" perfumes for you to try. I gave them the remit for DH for something that would make him smell like an expensive Lebanese businessman. They knew exactly what I meant and he is now wearing Bois de Portugal (Creed).

My cats go beserk for "Eau Froide" - they clamber over me trying to lick it off, purring loudly and making little growly noises. ConfusedGrin

Dona Ana - I used to work next to a Frederic Malle shop in Paris.

The really good perfumes at Chanel are only available at Chanel boutiques. Warmly recommended.

Really DonaAna What are they? What am I missing out on??

I want something classic, but not frumpy.
Something I can wear day or night and in any season.
Also I love the smell of roses, but favour oriental perfumes....
Not going to happen is it?
:(
