.....little shorts and thick tights. I am 39. If so far enough but if not please point me in the right direction of an outfit with a tight budget. Thank you x

What shape are you Dosey? I am about to be 39 and wouldn't wear short shorts but then I probably don't have the legs for them.

BunnyLebowski · 28/09/2012 15:37

Depends how little you're talking.

And how good your gams are.

IslaValargeone · 28/09/2012 15:39

Watching this intently, but I am even older Confused

headfairy · 28/09/2012 15:40

If you've got good legs I would say it's perfectly acceptible. Probably would veer more towards the tailored sort of shorts rather than denim cut offs with the pockets dangling.

WipsGlitter · 28/09/2012 15:42

Hmmmm. Most of the mums at my kids school are about this age and I'd be very surprised if they wore something like this. But if you're happy then go for it.

GobblersKnob · 28/09/2012 15:43

I do and am only two years younger than you. I think you should just wear what you look good in.

I can imagine someone 50+ carrying it off with great legs and slightly longer tailored shorts. I have seen many 19 year olds who, quite frankly, would be looking a whole lot better dressed in something else.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 28/09/2012 15:44

Depends on the shorts, and your legs. Tailored classy ones with black opaques- good. Hotpants - not so good.

IslaValargeone · 28/09/2012 15:45

Maybe we have to out our thigh measurements for a more definite answer :o

MerylStrop · 28/09/2012 15:50

State of legs less crucial than the personal style to pull it off.
Also, if on a budget not necessarily cost effective. Nowt worse than laddery or bobbly tights.
Also coat length must be considered.

Dosey · 28/09/2012 16:02

Hi and thank you for your replies. I do have good legs and a good figure. If i was going to wear it I would do tailored shorts maybe mid thigh. I can get away with short skirts and leggings. Just not sure if shorts are a step too far x

I think just above knee tailored shorts would look nice.

MoomieAndFreddie · 28/09/2012 17:28

I have been wondering this myself - am 33. and I have good legs.

regnamechange · 28/09/2012 17:31

I would say no sorry

HolyAutumnGoldBatman · 28/09/2012 17:32

I personally think if you're older than about 21, your too old for this particular look.

QueenBeebread · 28/09/2012 17:35

I haven't recently (pregnancy and for a bit after) but did at 33 and plan to do so again soon (nearly 36).

You need good legs, good tights and shorts in a weighty, conservative fabric though.

SocialButterfly · 28/09/2012 17:36

As long as they aren't denim shirts you'd probably be ok. To me denim ones are a big no no.

SocialButterfly · 28/09/2012 17:37

Shorts not shirts obviously Grin

sugarice · 28/09/2012 17:42

I think you'd look great. I love longer tweed shorts with opaque tights, and a crisp white shirt, it looks fab!

wonderstuff · 28/09/2012 17:45

Post a pic!

ujjayi · 28/09/2012 17:47

If you are too old at 39 then at 41 I must be total mutton! I wore shorts over tights two days ago for the first time since the early 90's. I received lots of genuine compliments.

I wore magenta & navy tweed ones from H&M over black merino tights with flat brogues. I would wear with mid-heel shoe boots for evening.

Don't go for just above the knee, denim or anything tight. I sized up for a slightly looser fit and mine sit mid-thigh.

Go for it. Life is too short (no pun intended). Oh and none of the other mums at the school my age would probably wear them either but then I wouldn't wear tunics from White Stuff so c'est la vie!!

Zwitterion · 28/09/2012 18:51

Go for it.

I wear tweedy wool ones, also from H and M, with grey cable tights, biker boots and a slouchy jumper.

I'm on the look out for a lace or sequiny pair too, if anyone's seen any!

dustyhousewithdustypeople · 28/09/2012 20:10

Inspired by the last thread like this, I wore grey tweed shorts with tights and boots this week, and loved it! I am 38.

I laugh in the face of age-appropriate dressing.

MarshaBrady · 28/09/2012 20:11

Tweed shorts with opaque tights are a great look.

MarshaBrady · 28/09/2012 20:12

And no not too old. Do mid-thigh.

Dosey · 28/09/2012 23:16

Thank you for the post ladies. I am going on a night out in a couple of weeks and have been pondering over this look for a while. I was thinking tweed shorts and thick wooly pattern tights and some sort of slouchy top. Still not sure what boots or shoes to wear though. Please keep your thoughts, ideas and advice coming x
