Not got a clue about skirts and shoes

I have been wearing trousers and jeans for years and I'm bored. I'd like to branch out into skirts, but I haven't the first clue about what shoes I could wear with them. I'm thinking maybe denim or cord skirts, just above the knee. I live in the Frozen North so I'll need proper weather-proof shoes, so not pumps or similar. Also, I'm useless at heels so they'll have to be flat and practical for toddler-walking. Any suggestions? Many thanks.

What about tights and boots, that's what I would wear anyway. Fly London boots are great.

White Stuff and FatFace do lovely denim and cord skirts which would look really casual with the tight/Fly Londong boot combo Lovewearingjeans suggests.

No particular reason, MrsW, but do tell what was the first thing that sprung to mind?!

Thank you all for your advice everyone. I guess I'll have to get some knee boots. I will look at your suggestions.
