Help with home hair dye please - ash tones v golden tones

I had a bit of a revelation of how clueless I am while posting on maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour's thread yesterday when somebody said that with her colouring, she should go for ash tones. I didn't know that there were rules to follow, I've just gone for colours that I liked and even when I've had it done at the hairdressers, they have followed my preference.

I have been dyeing my hair forever and currently use a medium golden blonde. It is a nice colour but I don't know that it is nice on me as whenever I see myself in a shop mirror, I don't like what I see, I always look a bit tired (I am anyway at moment due to poor sleeper DD2)

Should I be ash? I have blue eyes, (and they are my best feature) pale skin with freckles (and a few broken veins). My original hair colour is a mid hazel brown but now have a significant amount of grey. I have to use blusher to look at least half awake.

Would an ash tone work now over the golden blonde? What should I use?

I'm fair, with blue eyes and very pale skin and any warmth at all in my hair colour drains me completely.

I always ask for ash tones, and I love my current colours (highlights and lowlights), but I've never home dyed, always go to the hairdressers.

Thanks, I really can't justify the cost at the moment to go to the hairdressers, and would never be able to afford the upkeep.

Deep down, I've always wanted to be a red head but thinking now this might be disastrous!

Don't know about the availability of these "temporary" hair-color bottles in your
country; but here,at the "Beautyco",there is "shampoo-in hair color" that is
wet onto the current hair color.If you are concerned over the more "Brassey"
color your wear,making you look tired and old,I would try "Saucy Beige" in the
bottle.Just let it dry on, and That will tell you if the "ash-es" are for you.Jill.

I home dye (medium blonde) and go for a neutral tone (so between ash and honey). Honey is too yellow for my skin (makes me look sallow) and ash makes me look very tired. Try Nicy & Easy natural medium blonde (103a).
Also, if your hair starts too look a bit brassy ( mine always does after about 5 weeks), try a silver shampoo (John Frieda is good).

If you are wondering if you are warm or cool skin toned a good rule is to look at the veins on your inner wrist. Do they look green or blue.
Green=Warm
Blue=Cool
Your colouring sounds cool to me and would probably suit ash tones.
I am warm I think hazel eyes,pale skin and love earthy coloured clothes but for some reason I love ash tones of blonde hair am really drawn to that also love silver jewellery over gold so I guess their are exceptions to the rules.

kerstina I've tried the looking at my wrists thing, and still am confused. Some veins (probably majority) are blue, but there are green ones too. I have blue eyes (with some yellow in the middle, so that at times they look greeny), and boringly mousy hair (that I now dye). I still haven't a clue whether I'm 'cool' or 'warm'.

I'm definitely cool, just looking at the colours I wear, they are jewel colours, not earthy. Tamisara, do you wear gold or silver jewellery? Cool people suit silver and warms suit gold.

I think I will try the silver shampoo and try a temporary ash colour over my current dye job and see if that works.
