we're going to a wedding in a couple of weeks which is in the back of beyond so I'm going to have to do my hair myself mind you, it's not as if I'm always down the salon having a blow dry! the only style I can pull off apart from a straight blow dry job is a low sock bun. I was thinking of doing it to one side, just under my left ear. I've got a pretty red satin flower thingy I can stick in it too. this is the dress I'm wearing

Thing is I'm 42, slightly saggy and baggy and I'm wondering if I'll look a bit mutton dressed as lamb. Shall I just go for plain straight hair or an up do to make it look a bit more dressy? My hair is just about bra strap length and blonde with a rather grown out fringe.

I'm not sure what a sock bun is, but I really like those low side buns. Not sure about the flower.

Susieloo · 21/09/2012 20:26

Think a low bun off to one side will totally go with the dress and you will look lovely, dress is beautifulGrin

GobblersKnob · 21/09/2012 20:31

I think it sounds lovely, personally I would do it very slighly deconstructed and messy, but deliberately messy iyswim especially with your fringe.

The dress is beautiful.

sock bun is just using a sock to make a kind of doughnut ring wips which you then wrap your hair around to create a bun like this but off to the side

Thing is I can't do it very neatly, I was hoping the flower would hide the worst of it!

gobblers it would definitely be deliberately messy :o

I think you will look lovely! I am 47 and I would wear both the dress and the side bun!

When you get to a certain age, you have to be confident to wear what you like. Mutton is leopard skin or a tiny denim skirt not a beautiful dress and hair up. You will look great!

I think it sounds lovely too. I love love love the verity.

I did a similar with a large hair doughnut and had loads of complements.

I like messy but my hair is very fine and it wouldn't last all day unkempt. Fact is, I didn't have time so I washed and straightened my hair last thing the night before. I made a bit of a bouffant with my tangle tamer, put loads of spray in and it lasted all day and night. I had an alice band doodah for the day

aw, you lot are lovely! I'm having my hair trimmed and coloured next weekend so hopefully the 3 inches of mousey roots will be gone by then!

Hippy I've also got really fine hair, I think I'm going to have to use a million pins and half a can of hairspray to keep it all in.

I have nana hair and didn't use pins with a sock bun. I do it kind of like .

I split my hair in two. I spread it out over the bun and spray it rock hard at the end.

You sound ready to go.

headfairy · 21/09/2012 21:30

eggrules that video is pretty much what I want to do... right down to the flower (mine's red though)

Practise makes perfect. You'll be grand Grin

I find it easier not to look at what I am doing.
