birkenstocks, how long do you keep yours?

i have some lovely birkenstocks which i live in, but they are very moulded to my feet, as they should be. I have had them about 6 months, maybe a bit more. i am very biased about them as they are so comfy and have no idea how long they should last or when to stop wearing them. I wear them with everything, even tea dresses. should I? or just keep them for the beach/ park.

Two summers generally but tbh they are a bit manky by the end of the second summer. Too expensive to buy new every year tho

TellMeLater · 18/09/2012 19:47

I haven't thrown a pair out yet!

numbertaker · 18/09/2012 19:48

I have had a pair for 4 years and still going strong.

ihatethecold · 18/09/2012 20:05

I've had mine about 5 yrs. love them. They are not going anywhere Grin

ILoveApples · 18/09/2012 23:17

I live in Birkenstocks buying my first pair 20 years ago. One of my current pairs must be well over 7 years old and the sole is wearing away so I just use them for walking the dog, decorating or popping into the garden. They're lovely and comfy though so I won't bin them yet and they look very fetching with paint splatters

CremeEggThief · 18/09/2012 23:20

Just threw out mine today! Bought them in the summer of 2006, although some summers have only seen a few days' wear.

CointreauVersial · 18/09/2012 23:23

Mine will be going on eBay as soon as I get around to it. Nasty, clumpy things - I wore my pair about twice and regret buying them. They weren't even that comfy.

AnyFucker · 18/09/2012 23:24

until they fall apart !

6 month-old Birkies are brand new

LegArmpits · 18/09/2012 23:27

I adore mine. Two summers old and I reckon they'll last forever.

cece · 18/09/2012 23:33

I have loads of pairs which I rotate. I throw mine out when they fall apart/wear out.

No idea how long they an individual pair lasts though as I have so many pairs. I love my Birkies - been wearing them for years and YES they do go with everything.

HipHopOpotomus · 18/09/2012 23:35

I've just Retired a pair after 7 solid summers. Now they are house only.

In Germany you can get them resoled - don't know if you can do it here too?

cece · 18/09/2012 23:37

sob - resoled? I have thrown them away when I could have kept them!?

janji · 18/09/2012 23:59

Keep until they wear out. Refresh the inner sole each year by dabbing with water & tea tree oil.

Lavenderhoney · 19/09/2012 03:32

Just noticed mine have a crack in the sole who is hardly noticeable, think its fom wading across a river. But i had no idea they were a lifetime purchase:)

This is revolting but I am currently wearing a pair that are 15 years old. Strictly for around the house. I just cannot part with them.

SamsGoldilocks · 19/09/2012 08:28

You can send them back to birkenstocks and get them re-soled for about £20. But you can also take them to a cobblers and have a new non-birkie sole added. I find the heels go so they don't last as long as 7 years but....

missmartha · 19/09/2012 08:40

I have never thrown a pair away. You can fresher them up with a good clean and send them off to get them resoled fairly cheaply.

I have a pair of sandals that I've had since 2004 that haven't needed anything but a bit of a wipe inside. They show no signs of wearing out at all.

I agree, six months Birkies are new Birkies.

Just hoping my dh never sees this thread as he will not be hs usual nderstanding self if I ever buy shoes again:)

Mine have just done their 3rd summer and I am planning to retire them. The cork part of the sole has cracks in it and there is no tread on the rubber part. Plus the toe post of the top bit has been stretched out of shape. I will be buying the same model again though, I love them!

I am a bit disappointed they haven't gone on for longer but I did wear them for 8 months of pregnancy! Grin

Dawndonna · 20/09/2012 22:07

Mine have just done summer number 5. I think that maybe next year they'll be garden only.

horsebiscuit · 20/09/2012 22:25

Thanks for that info SamsGoldilocks, you've just saved me quite a bit of money! I had never thought of getting them resoled through the Birkenstocks store...
