If you like Chanel no.5, what other perfumes do you like?

Just that really. I have realised that I don't actually like all those 'fresh', 'fruity', 'floral' perfumes about and which I have worn for 15 years. I do not want to smell of vanilla or lemon.

I have discovered chanel no.5, but feel a bit funny about only having one option and would like some ideas. I am not talking super heavy like Opium, but classic, grown up perfumes.

So, if you like no.5, what else do you wear?

I also like coco, and D&G the One. Also Paco Rabanne Lady Million.

IDismyname · 12/09/2012 21:19

Cristalle - also from Chanel

toastandmarmiterocks · 12/09/2012 21:28

Allure is lovely. I've started wearing guerlain's initial. Hard to beat no.5 though.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 12/09/2012 21:31

Lots of Chanel suggestions so far. That's good as I'll be passing through a duty free soon and there's always a Chanel isn't there!

Thanks for the others too. Every time I try to 'browse' I smell 2 or 3 unpleasant powdery ones and then can't get the smell out of my nose. I like the idea of Guerlain. I always see that as very sophisticated. Will check out the Paco Rabanne and the D&G one too.

Anyone else feel free to add!

Your taste is very classic and quite rare these days.
The key word is aldehydic. (You seem to dislike heavy orientals.)

If you dislike fruity florals, you should explore both classics and modern niche perfumery, because very few mainstream releases will appeal to you.

You could explore vintage perfumes on eBay but many aldehydic perfumes go flat and change in a few years.

Instead, you should try Chanel No. 22 and Rive Gauche by YSL (the classic blue and black bottle). And how about Nahema by Guerlain? If you can find it, also Amouage Gold Woman. And even rarer, Vega by Guerlain.

Do you like classic Estee Lauders? (White Linen and Knowing for example?)
Have you explored classic chypres - Mitsouko by Guerlain and Femme by Rochas?

You might be intersted to know that some modern niche parfumeurs are revisiting aldehydes. Miriam by Tauer Perfumes and Aldehyde 44 by Le Labo are some great modern aldehydic perfumes.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 12/09/2012 22:23

Oh wow Dona, that is amazing. You sound like you really know about perfumes. I definitely feel some online exploring coming on. Or are there any shops I should try to get to (can do central London if that helps).

I like White Linen (I think, if I am thinking of the right one), but not sure about Knowing. I am not keen on Beautiful on me (which a friend wears).

Gucci Guilty I am currently quite fond of. It's quite like no 5 but a bit more woody.

VinoEsmeralda · 12/09/2012 22:31

Jil sander no3 ( yes no3) and allure sensuelle

SoleSource · 12/09/2012 22:34

Yvpresse, coco mademoiselle, Burberry body.

HoopDePoop · 12/09/2012 22:52

Coco

brighthair · 13/09/2012 00:24

My mum wears Chanel no 5. She also likes Shalimar, Lush Ginger and a brand called Juliette has a gun
D&G woman (in the red box) is nice too. Oh she also liked Elie Saab when I squirted her with that Grin

BaronessBomburst · 13/09/2012 00:35

Maja by Myrurgia. It's actually very cheap, despite being launched in about 1920 and you can also get soap and body lotion etc so good for everyday and work.

BaronessBomburst · 13/09/2012 00:37

I also like Arpege by Lanvin.

Pisces · 13/09/2012 00:53

Estee Lauder - Sensuous

Benaberry · 15/09/2012 10:07

Channel No5 is one of my all time favourites, although I tend to wear it for special, evening occasions (think that stems from my mum doing the same!).

Absolute daytime favourite is Channel No5 Eau Premiere (but found the EDP smells different, and to my nose, nicer, than the EDT, so do try both). Tried a new one by Guerlain the other day, La Petite Robe Noir, and really like that too.

Going to have to hunt down some of these other suggestions to see if I can broaden my collection!

MooMinCow · 15/09/2012 11:38

I tend to stick to Chanel perfumes too - can't stand all these sweet fruity scents around at the moment - who wants to smell like a fruit salad FFS?

Personal faves are Allure, Chance Eau Fraiche and Coco for going out. Prada do some lovely grown up scents too - their original one is my other 'going out' fragrance and the Infusion D'Iris is a crisp fresh yet powdery scent for daytime IMO.

I want to try some of the Guerlain classic ones next.

WAD · 15/09/2012 12:14

The new Coco Noir is nice, softer / mellower than the original Coco which, although delightful, I find a bit too 'spicy'.

toastandmarmiterocks · 15/09/2012 12:43

There is another lovely Guerlain one too. I've just looked at the bottles and realised I got the other one's name wrong. There is Shalimar Parfum Initial l'eau which is similar to the original Shalimar but younger and better for daytime. Then there is L'instant de Guerlain which is not as heavy as the other and really good for daytime.

Sidge · 15/09/2012 12:54

I wear Chanel No 5 a lot, and also love Calvin Klein's In2U.

FermezLaBouche · 15/09/2012 12:58

Chanel chance is lovely and Marc Jacobs Lola - but I'm guessing Lola's not for you as it's floral. (Not light though.)
Also, I think it's been stopped now but if you can get a bottle of Alexander McQueen's Kingdom - it's LOVELY.

juniorant · 15/09/2012 18:18

I am no 5 fan and always wear it.
But coco nice for christmas and recently discovered ysatis which I keep spraying on in shops.
The old diors are lovely too - miss dior, diorissimo, diorella etc
I ahve loved no 5 since i was 16 i'm 41 now.

SuperB0F · 15/09/2012 18:21

Prada For Women is a good grown-up scent with a similar glamour to Chanel No.5.

I'll try to find a link to the one I mean.

SuperB0F · 15/09/2012 18:22

This is it: Prada Amber For Women.
