So skinny jeans and flats are dated :( Help!

According to this thread my skinny jean and flats combo is now dated. I knew this point would come one day I suppose, but what do I wear now?

I am 5' 6" with long, skinny arms and legs, a flat tummy but no waist (I'm very short-waisted, I think a thin 'brick' shape, if that makes sense). I am still breastfeeding my youngest so am fairly large-of-nork and will be running around after a 2 and a 3 year old so need to be practically attired.

I will also need to find a replacement for my skinnies-tucked-into-knee-high-boot combo for the winter (already aware this one is dead in the water, just not figured out what I can wear instead...

Boot cuts, mum boots and a bat jumper!

mirpuppet · 12/09/2012 11:09

Wear what you like. If you are comfortable with your style keep it.

neverquitesure · 12/09/2012 11:15

Mum boots? They do at least sound comfortable. Who's to say I'm not already wearing the bat jumper Wink I wore boot cuts in my early 20s as a teenager and they looked God-awful on me then. I can't imagine much has changed.

Not sure I have a style really. Not a purposeful one anyway. I think I fell off the style wagon after getting pregnant and would like to climb back on now.

After losing weight and finally looking good in skinnies & long boots I'm gutted! Will be a rebel and still wear them.

dinkystinky · 12/09/2012 11:30

Look - if you've found a style that works for you and your lifestyle, and you're happy with it, stick with it! Fashion is so cyclical what's out today will be back in tomorrow anyway...

ihatethecold · 12/09/2012 11:37

I think it's ridiculous that anyone feels they can't wear something because someone one else has decided its out of fashion!

If you like it , wear it.
Who gives a monkeys if you should be on the the next season of clothes. Angry
Not everyone can just go buy new clothes and shoes!
Rant over Wink

HoopDePoop · 12/09/2012 12:02

Right. You can still wear skinnies with ballerinas: you roll them up a little bit = tah-dah, you're fashionable again. Then you need to start hunting for some ankle boots, either flat or with a chunkyish heel like cowboy boots. You can wear your jeans (baggy boyfriendish, straight or skinny) insouciantly tucked into them.

HoopDePoop · 12/09/2012 12:05

this will keep you right. It says you're ok with knee highs as long as your skinnies are properly skinny Smile

snowmummy · 12/09/2012 13:37

I don't think its dead at all but just like the other thread said, its not a look that suits everyone who wears it.

Startailoforangeandgold · 12/09/2012 13:48

I was delighted when long boots came back into fashion, I shall wear them until they fall apart.
Just as on other days I wear mum boots and boot cut Gap jeans, that have also yet to fall apart.

And I pray for the return of nice, non Mummsy cotton tops and death to frilly see through plastic.

neverquitesure · 12/09/2012 16:19

Death to see-through from me too! Has never worked with my figure!

Thank you all for your help (and encouragement to buck the trend if that's what I want). Your advice & links are priceless thanks Hoop. I've actually been rolling up my jeans most summer so I guess I've accidentally arrived on trend. First time for everything I suppose.

I agree. I take no notice of the fashion police, but try not to look too dated. I wear what suits me (in my case not skinnies). So does that make me a fashion leader now?

Meggles76 · 12/09/2012 17:36

I am a lover of skinny jeans and heeled ankle boots and will continue to wear. I'm 5ft and v petite and it is a look that works for me.
However today I wore a pair of bootcut cords and the compliments rolled in. 2 colleagues asked if i lost weight! I will be wearing more often!

Wear what you like. I wear skinny jeans with flats, even if I know it is a dated combo. Who cares?

This autumn I will buy brogues though and ankle trousers.

BonnyDay · 12/09/2012 18:19

dont listen to people on the internet

Lovewearingjeans · 12/09/2012 18:36

I am a mum and work with small children and there is nothing worse than sitting on the floor with the bottom of your trousers wet, this is why I stick with skinny trousers in the boots look!

Peeenut · 12/09/2012 19:15

I have no idea if Skinny jeans are be this seasons big story in the fashion mags but the high street stores are stuffed with them.

ZuleikaJambiere · 12/09/2012 19:30

Can I hijack and ask Meggles where you got your cords from? I'm hankering after a pair. Thanks

mamaonion · 12/09/2012 19:37

Sorry new here- what exactly are mum boots? Are they bad (as in 'mumsy') or can they be hot (as in milf-y)? Seen loads of reference decanted to be clear! Just discovered s& b!

noddyholder · 12/09/2012 19:47

I love my skinnies and flats its an everyday look. Most of my friends wear this too and other things but don't think its dated its fairly classic.

CakeInMyFace · 12/09/2012 19:49

Fwiw half the people I saw in town today were in skinnies and flats me included!

regnamechange · 12/09/2012 19:51

Won't be getting me out of my converse for a good while yet! I can't pull of flats of the ballerina style as well as my feet are like boats! Grin the laces of converse hide it a bit better. Failing that mum and riding boots all the way Grin
