Warm not bulky coat for size 18/20 - is it out there?

I have a waterproof mac but no room for thick jumpers under. For the 2 winters of school runs I have been frozen. This year it must change. But I am stumped.

I have ordered and returned most of the usual suspects - in a Lands End Squall I looked like a purple sausage, Same in the Craghoppers one. Merrell Wakefields and like are gorgeous but not made for my hefty frame.

Slightly showerproof good but not essential. TK Max. Could only offer shiny metallic puffa things with shawl collars. I'm early 40s. Do I give up and get the ubiquitous fur hooded khaki or black parka?

Rather avoid black, drains my fair complexion. Like brown, navy, darker greens, grey? Oh and budget not huge, well under £100. Am I a hopeless case?

Last Year

Can I join your cause please? Desperately looking for a size 18ish showerproof coat, too!

Glad to have you blue2! I don't want to look glamorous or anything, just not completely hideous. Can it be done?

Is this as impossible as it seems?

Sorry Last - forgot to check back with you...

Looks like we're on our own..... :(

LittlePandaBear · 09/09/2012 15:35

How about something like this from Next?

accessorizequeen · 09/09/2012 18:56

Seasalt? Though may be over budget. Gap do A parka in grey www.gap.eu/browse/product.do?cid=68138&vid=1&pid=000903295&scid=000903295001 under budget. I am wearing dp's old gortex currently and look vile. If you just want showerproof, a wool coat with rain hat combo might be a lot more flattering. And warmer!

FannyFifer · 09/09/2012 18:57

Oh can I join, need a warm waterproof coat for winter but not one that looks like I'm going hiking. Grin

accessorizequeen · 09/09/2012 18:57

If you like the gap, there's a 30% voucher around which ends tonight!

this looks really straight up down but has an internal drawcord to bring it in at the waist.
Its very warm too and light there are more colours than the black or plum but at a price

ContinentalKat · 10/09/2012 19:07

Watching with interest.
Any progress anyone?

Hijacking your thread but just wanted to ask: I have a lovely blue duffle coat that I was going to put on eBay size 18 Evans. (sorry not waterproof so not at all helpful) But I changed my mind because the zip has come away a bit at the bottom so I didn't think anyone would buy it. Seeing this thread though makes me think their might be a call for it? Do you think their would? Sorry again for hijacking hit your opinions would be great.

I have a regatta coat size 20 but it's old and needs replacing. In my experience regatta is the only one that does waterproof coats that fit me I'm 18/20

I'm on asos at the moment and they have a few nice coats there. There's a military style mid thigh length one I like, also a parka. I always tend to use a hat in cold weather anyway so a hood isn't necessary. The military one is winning atm as I like the cut.

I have just bought myself this:

www.marksandspencer.com/Indigo-Collection-Cotton-Hooded-Parka/dp/B00320WE7C?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_2&nodeId=42967030&sr=1-2&qid=1348049810&pf_rd_r=0V0S6GKJ351RX8Q68A0T&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=0&pf_rd_p=321381407&pf_rd_s=center-3#CustomerReviewsHeader

It does look a lot nicer in real life, and the fur is detachable.
Reasonably warm, but when it gets really bad I still have a super warm ski coat.

I got a Gloverall duffle coat in the John Lewis sale a couple of years or so ago. It is very warm. But not waterproof. It was still very dear but I think it was worth it.
