Please explain the rules of tights

I have lost the baby weight, and for the first time in a long, long, time am thinking about SKIRTS!

I have just bought a nice casual skirt, just above the knee in a sort of mushroom/oyster colour. I was thinking it was nice and neutral but now I haven't a clue what to do re leg coverage. I have some veins which I would rather not have on show.

I have 2 pairs of long brown boots. One pair is the right shade but too flat so my legs look dumpy. The other pair has a decent heel but is too warm in colour.
I have several pairs of shoes that should work in theory but I don't know how to bring together with tights.

I am guessing that nude or tan shoes should not be worn with any dark tights? Are flesh coloured tights a real no-no these days? Are bright contrasting colours a bit weird? What about brown opaques, what sort of shoes would go with these?

I haven't shown leg for ages and am frankly a little scared. TIA.

Watching with interest

user12785 · 02/09/2012 15:38

Me too! I tend to go straight from bare legs to black opaque tights, which means that I am chilly then too hot in autumn!

Phwooooar · 02/09/2012 15:46

May I be so bold as to suggest nude fishnet tights? I buy Pamela Mann fishnets from mytights.com - they kind of bring an outfit together without clashing. Got the tip off here and now they are my staple before I hit the opaques!

BonnyDay · 02/09/2012 15:46

i hate hate hate nude fishnets

maryquant · 02/09/2012 15:53

White stuff have some nice coloured lacey tights £8
As do TK

GobblersKnob · 02/09/2012 15:58

Any chance of a link to the skirt?

Knowing the shape and the weight of the fabric would help.

Nagoo · 02/09/2012 16:04

I like mustard/ rust type colour tights for Autumn but I am not sure about whether it would clash with your skirt.... link to skirt please.

Marenostrum · 02/09/2012 16:08

Brown tights matching the colour of your high boots?

RikersBeard · 02/09/2012 16:18

I can't find a pic of skirt online sorry, small shop.

It's slightly a-line, above knee, quite a stiff twill fabric so not drapey.

The colour is sort of mushroom soup, a greyish brown. So warm brown/chocolate wouldn't work. But mink or sable-like shades might. Actually, rust might, I will hold it next to my rust jumper to see.

The high boots are warm chocolate and the colour just isn't right at all unfortunately. I take it just normal flesh tights are out? :o

If coloured laceys what colours? Is it ok to wear bright green and things or is that a hideous thing to do?

Grey opaques? Or burgundy? There is a lot of burgundy around atm.

PoshPaula · 02/09/2012 20:09

I wear nude sheer tights with skirts and ankle boots, and I love nude fishnets. Have worn them loads, with boots of all descriptions. Last winter I was wearing coloured opaques, lacy woollens, black opaques with skirts. There is a lot happening with tights now and I think anything goes if you feel it looks right. My legs are my best (physical) feature, I think, and I wear skirts as often as possible! (just one thing - if you do go for nude sheers make them really sheer!)

knitknack · 02/09/2012 20:15

I wear brown tights and boots with mushroom all the time! I wear brown tights with everything :D

Mumelie · 02/09/2012 21:02

What about navy or purple opaques with the skirt? If its edging towards greys rather than browns you could go for cooler colours tight wise.

openerofjars · 02/09/2012 21:06

Teal or burgundy opaques or lacy?

Well done on losing the baby weight! Envy

RikersBeard · 02/09/2012 21:45

Thanks everyone, I am going to try and be a bit adventurous and try some different types of tights. I also think I might invest in another pair of boots. They have to be long, as I am short of leg so the current short boot with skirt look is horrendous on me. I like the sound of purple/burgundy as I wear lots of blue and brown, and I will have a look at nude fishnets (have never seen them yet).

openerofjars I can only credit Dr John Briffa with my weight loss. His book Escape the Diet Trap is fab!

Have a look on Tabio's website, big range of colours in tights and socks.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 03/09/2012 11:23

I like nude/tan shoes with dark tights. Also silver/pewter shoes with dark tights. Any kind of contrast is good, IMO.

With your skirt, I'd go for boots or shoes in a bright colour and perhaps grey tights ? more black-grey than brown grey, IYSWIM, so it doesn't look as though you're trying to match them with your skirt.

Or bright tights (red? Wine? Grape?) with shoes/boots in a brown neutral, but again a colour that is definitely different from the skirt.

Tabio, mentioned above, is good. American Apparel also have a great range of tight colours.

First rule of tights... don't talk about tights.
Second rule of tights... don't talk about tights!
